I want to live in Nippets’ charming, silly hidden objects world

Hidden object games always amuse me conceptually, as there’s this sort of unspoken implication that we act as some sort of god-like figure from on high, discovering secrets that maybe weren’t meant to be found. They’re games about getting yourself involved in the lives of others unbeknownst to them, and it’s through whatever power you may have that you shape said lives. In Nippets, out today, that power is your hand, with which you poke, prod, and swipe the world and all its inhabitants.

As developer Blink Industries describes it, Snippets is a “hand-drawn hidden object game inspired by the joy of people watching and telling small stories.” And what a delight people watching appears to be. Much like the pages of a Where’s Wally? book, there are all sorts of folks going about their lives, all with their own little problems. There’s the crybaby child upset that, in their hubris, they kicked their ball too high and it landed in a tree, so you grab it down and those crocodile tears are wiped away.

You’ll find various maps to explore, all of them filled with missing objects with homes that you must locate. It honestly looks quite relaxing just watching the world go about its business, but problems are not solved simply by watching, so grab, push, and pull those objects you must. I’m particularly charmed by all the different buildings you can go in that act as little microcosms of secrets. It makes the worlds feel so much bigger and lived in, like the buildings aren’t just facades to serve your gameplay needs. It’s a place I’d like to live in!

Perhaps most charming of all is the fridge that appears to be the main menu, adorned with photos of the different maps you can enter. What is loveliest about this is that completing certain tasks unlocks achievements which then grant you magnets you can affix to the fridge. I can’t help but be charmed by this as someone with a healthy collection of magnets on my own fridge. It would also be remiss of me to not mention the fact that Nippets runs no longer than three hours long, so it sounds like the perfect game to pick up for 20 minutes every now and then.

Nippets is out on Steam today.
