SAS Unveils Special Livery To Commemorate 80 Years Of Flying


Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has unveiled one of the more eye-catching special liveries seen so far this year: an Airbus A330-300 painted in an all-blue 80th anniversary color scheme. The aircraft marks the start of SAS’ 80th year of operations and is designed to celebrate eight decades of linking Scandinavia with the wider world.

SAS says the aircraft will be used as part of a broader anniversary campaign focused on the carrier’s heritage and continuing role in regional and long-haul connectivity. The choice of aircraft is fitting, as using one of the airline’s long-haul workhorses directly ties the aircraft to the birth of the airline, which began with intercontinental flying. Its first flight in special colors is scheduled to New York JFK Airport (JFK), a deliberate nod to the destination that helped define SAS in its earliest years.

The Flight That Started It All

SAS traces its origins to 1946, when it was formed from the Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish airline interests that were then operating international services. On SAS’ own history timeline, the carrier says it was created from the merger of Det Danske Luftfartselskab (Denmark), Det Norske Luftfartselskap (Norway), and Svensk Interkontinental Lufttrafik (Sweden), and that the same year it launched its first intercontinental flights.

That first crossing took place on September 17, 1946, and quickly became one of the landmark moments in postwar European commercial aviation. The flight was operated by a Douglas DC-4 named Dan Viking, carrying 28 passengers from Stockholm’s Bromma Airport (BMA) to New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA). It was nothing like today’s transatlantic hops: the trip took around 25 hours, and included intermediate stops at Copenhagen, Prestwick, and Gander before reaching New York.

Eighty years later, SAS is a very different airline in scale and structure. The SkyTeam carrier now serves more than 25 million passengers a year and flies to 135 destinations. The DC-4s are long gone and replaced by a fleet of nearly 140 aircraft, with its long-haul flying carried out with an all-Airbus fleet of A330-300s, A350-900s, and most recently, A321LRs. As the new special livery was revealed, CEO Anko van der Werff explained why it’s so important to the airline:

“For 80 years, Scandinavian Airlines has driven innovation and brought Scandinavia closer to the world through safe and reliable operations. From our first transatlantic flight to today’s global network, that purpose remains unchanged. This aircraft is a symbol of our heritage, and of the role we play every day for our customers and the societies we serve.”

The aircraft chosen for the special scheme is Airbus A330-300 named Tore Viking, with the registration LN-RKR. It was delivered to SAS in 2015, so is one of the younger A330s in the fleet, and a very active long-haul widebody. That is an important detail. SAS has not placed the Special Livery on a spare airframe or a niche aircraft used only occasionally. It has intentionally put the livery on a frontline jet that passengers are likely to see on a wide range of major intercontinental routes, giving the anniversary real visibility across the network.

Inside, the aircraft reflects SAS’ established premium-heavy configuration that suits the carrier’s transatlantic profile, where a strong mix of corporate travelers, connecting passengers, and higher-yield leisure demand remains important. The A330-300 is configured with 266 seats in a three-class layout as follows:

  • 32 Business Class seats: Thompson Aero Vantage XL seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, with a 48″ row pitch, 22″ seat width, and which convert into a fully-flat bed.
  • 56 Premium Economy seats: Safran 5810 seats configured 2-3-2, with a 38″ row pitch, 18.3″ seat width, and 8″ recline
  • 178 Economy seats: Zim EC01 seats configured 2-4-2, with a 31″ row pitch, 18″ seat width, and 6″ recline

But it is the exterior that makes the aircraft stand out. The design uses SAS’ trademark blue across the full fuselage for the first time, giving the aircraft a much bolder presence. The design incorporates the flags of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden wrapped around the fuselage, underlining the three-nation foundation of the airline, with a nod to the airline’s classic 1980s styling. The design also incorporates an anniversary emblem on the tail, inspired by the aircraft’s engines and fuselage. The result is one of those rare special liveries that is instantly recognizable from a distance.

Growing Transatlantic Presence: Exploring SAS’ 13 US & Canadian Routes

On three out of 13 of those routes, SAS deploys its narrowbody Airbus A321LR aircraft.

New York First, Then The Spotlight

SAS has made the symbolism of the aircraft’s first assignment very clear. The airline set the anniversary A330’s first flight from Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), explicitly echoing the historic transatlantic route to the New York area that shaped SAS’ early long-haul identity. After a two-week stint at the paint shop in Shannon, the aircraft embarked on its first flight in its new colors yesterday, returning to SAS’ primary base early this morning.

As for the wider anniversary program, SAS has not yet published a long list of splashy one-off events, but it has been clear about the broader shape of the celebrations. The airline says that throughout 2026 it will highlight its heritage and ongoing role in linking people, businesses, and societies, while SAS-linked anniversary messaging has hinted that more moments of celebration are still to come.

That means the blue A330 is just the opening act: a flying centerpiece for a year in which the world’s most punctual airline will keep leaning into its history, its Scandinavian identity, and the New York route that first put it on the global map.
