Vultures – Scavengers Of Death is a turn-based, extraction take on Resident Evil, and it’s out next month

As pretty (and ugly) as the Resident Evil games have become over the years, there is a quality to the original PS1 entries that lingers on in the hearts of many. That’ll likely be partially down to the permanently raised heart rates of kids playing them too young everywhere. But I think the thing that endures in the ever popular PS1 aesthetic in the indie horror scene is that nasty griminess that just feels so at home. And Vultures – Scavengers of Death, a turn-based, extractiony take on Resident Evil, looks like it’ll stay true to that vibe.

Vultures is one of those kinds of PS1-style games where, as long as you ignore the UI, which definitely has some more modern sensibilities, you could believe it came out on the original console, perhaps in its twilight years. The Resident Evil influences are apparent in more than just the look of it. It’s set in a town called Salento Valley following a bio-hazard incident, and you play as either of two characters part of an outfit called Vulture. You can almost see the Tipp-Ex covering the back of Resi’s box.

The difference lies in what you’re doing and how you do it. For the what, you choose from two characters, Leopoldo, a strong character who can push around objects in his environment to get the upperhand, and Amber, an analytical character with a grappling gun for getting around. You then venture out on missions with the goal of extracting your target, whatever that may be, using any resources you pick up along the way to accomplish this goal.

That already puts enough of a spin on Resident Evil, but then enters the how. As opposed to Resi’s real-time third-person shooting, in Vultures everything is turn-based. Think of it as almost a fusion between Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story, with the ability to target specific body parts, with movement based around a squares-based grid. Taking your environment into consideration as you make choices looks pretty key as a result.

I’m quite interested in picking up what Vultures is putting down, and if you are too, good news! It’ll be out in just under a month on April 28th. You can wishlist it right here.
