Dataminers think they’ve found evidence of an unannounced Game Pass tier showing only older first-party games

It looks like Xbox may be considering introducing a Game Pass tier dedicated to its first-party games.

As spotted by Game Pass dataminer @redphx and reported by Windows Central, Redphx believes they’ve found references to a tier codenamed ‘Trion’ while rummaging around in Microsoft’s public-facing backend, and all signs point to it being a new Game Pass tier that, unlike the existing Essential, Premium, and Ultimate tiers, only includes games from Xbox Studios.

According to Redphx, the list reportedly includes:

  • Doom Eternal
  • Doom 64
  • Dishonored 2
  • Fable Anniversary
  • Fallout 4
  • Fallout 76
  • Gears 5
  • Halo 5
  • Halo Wars 2
  • Hellblade
  • Ori and the Blind Forest
  • Psychonauts
  • State of Decay 2
  • The Elder Scrolls Online

As commenters pointed out almost immediately, this is a list of pretty old games, and ignores newer Xbox first-party titles like Starfield, South of Midnight, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and the Forza series. Even 2018’s Sea of Thieves is conspicuously missing.

However, without further context, or all the details (this may only be representative of the tier and not the complete list) it’s difficult to gauge how plausible a tier like this could be, particularly as we don’t have any information about possible costs, or whether or not this will include day one exclusives.

Nonetheless, a shake-up of the oft-changing Game Pass subscription service intimates further changes could be on the way as Xbox’s new CEO, Asha Sharma, settles into her new role.

Last week’s Xbox Partner Preview showcase ushered in a mix of bigger third-party games and some smaller indie treats, including an announcement of a Stalker 2 expansion, a brand-new Serious Sam game, new Stranger Than Heaven details, a new one from Atomfall developer Rebellion, and an Xbox release window for Hades 2 and Dispatch. Here’s everything you need to know.
