After falling just a few wins short of a national title, the future is bright for Longhorns men’s basketball. Their roster is stacked with talent, with more stars on the way. That includes four-star signee Joe Sterling, who is just months from making his collegiate debut. On Friday, Sterling made headlines by adding to his trophy case.
The talented guard was named the LA Daily News’ offensive player of the year. While leading the Harvard-Westlake High offense, Sterling averaged 22 points per game, four assists per game, and five rebounds per game. The future Longhorn was also efficient from three-point range, shooting 43 percent.
While Sterling was a human highlight reel, his success comes as no surprise. Currently, he is ranked as ninth best player from California in his class by 247Sports. They also rank Sterling as the 11th-best combo guard and the 96th-best player in the nation. That is partly why Longhorns head coach Sean Miller is excited to get Sterling on the Forty Acres.

While the expectations are high, Sterling will get some help from his fellow recruits. The Longhorns 2026 class also features Austin Goosby, who is ranked within the top 100. Having both Goosby and Sterling in the mix should give the Longhorns an offense that is hard to stop.
Although the Longhorns’ March Madness run came to a heartbreaking end against Purdue, they are well-positioned to return to the NCAA tournament. Last year, Miller showed he could add talent through the portal, and a few key veterans, such as Nic Codie, are returning. Adding a talented recruiting class to the mix, headlined by Sterling, should lead to plenty of wins in Austin.
