Everything You Need To Know

Last-minute business-class award tickets are booked with airline miles and vary. They are typically within two to three weeks of the scheduled departure, but sometimes within days. This can sometimes result in airlines releasing additional award inventory for otherwise empty premium seats. Naturally, a precondition is that the airline has failed to sell its premium seats, as, if the system assesses that all the premium seats will be sold at the full cash rate, then they will not be offered at a discount.

Last-minute awards can be cheaper (when measured in points) than booking far in advance and paying in cash, as airlines release lower-cost fare buckets. It is not really possible to put a number on how much these upgrades cost due to dynamic pricing and other complicating factors. As such, this article will talk in general and offer tips on how to improve passengers’ chances of getting a good upgrade deal and booking a lower-cost business class fare in cash.

As an aside, it is worth noting before we begin that award tickets are different from mileage upgrades, which allow passengers to redeem miles to upgrade an existing cash ticket to a higher cabin. They are also different from cash upgrade offers made by airlines close to departure.

What Are Business Class Award Tickets?

Business class award tickets are tickets that allow travelers to redeem frequent flight miles or points for business class seats, typically at a lower cost than the cash cost. Business class award tickets are typically available on major airlines and alliances. Details vary from airline to airline. Japan Airlines says that awards can be redeemed for short domestic flights for economy class, starting at 7,500 miles for one-way travel and 15,000 miles for a round-trip ticket.

On this front, Singapore Airlines says that “KrisFlyer members may choose to redeem their miles for award tickets. A Saver award requires fewer KrisFlyer miles. However, it’s very popular, and availability may be limited. Early planning and flexibility in travel dates and times may be required. An Advantage award requires more miles.” The carrier adds that it offers a choice of more seats on all flights and two complimentary stopovers per round-trip ticket.

Some airlines allow passengers to find available seats on partner airlines. It should be noted that, as with many airline upgrades, miles can cover the fare that the airline levies, but not the taxes and airport charges, as well as the surcharges that the airline may levy. Passengers will still need to pay cash for taxes and surcharges. These vary significantly by airline, route, and other factors.

Not All Fares Can Be Upgraded

Passengers purchasing a lower fare with the intention of upgrading it later should be careful to ensure that the ticket they are purchasing is upgradable. Some base economy-class fares on some airlines cannot be upgraded. As a general rule, airlines also only allow passengers to upgrade to the next cabin.

This means that economy class passengers can upgrade to premium economy, and premium economy passengers can upgrade to business class. As such, when discussing how much it costs to upgrade with award points to business, this is typically only for passengers already holding an eligible premium class ticket. With that being said, not all flights necessarily have premium class, in which case, eligible economy class passengers may be able to upgrade to business class.

Some airlines, like American Airlines and United Airlines, do not permit passengers to upgrade award tickets with miles. It’s also good to keep in mind that offers are typically one-way, not for return flights. Airlines tend to prioritize loyalty passengers with complimentary upgrades and waitlists, although award tickets are usually first-come, first-served inventory.

Tips For Booking Deals

Some key programs that are frequently praised for good last-minute business class awards include Air Canada Aeroplan, United Airlines’ MileagePlus, the British Airways Club, and American Airlines’ AAdvantage. Air Canada Aeroplan is sometimes praised for having good last-minute, no close-in fees, and is recognized as great for Star Alliance partner airlines. Some recommend using online tools like ExpertFlyer and Seats.aero, in addition to airline sites, to check availability.

By being part of alliances and having partner airlines, the way deals are offered is given layers. For example, seats may appear through partner programs, but not on the operating airline. As such, a flight operated by United Airlines can also be booked with miles through platforms like Air Canada’s Aeroplan program, ANA’s Mileage Club, and Avianca’s LifeMiles scheme. Each of these programs has its own pricing chart, and the same seat may appear significantly different on each website.

Different programs can also allow different routing rules. United Airlines, for instance, has fairly strict routing limits, while Air Canada Aeroplan allows for more complex multi-segment itineraries. Some airline websites (like Air Canada and United) show almost everything, while others (like American and Delta Air Lines) often hide partner seats. The taxes and fees can also differ dramatically by website, even if the miles pricing is more or less the same.

The Cost Of Last-Minute Business Class Award Tickets

How much it costs to upgrade to business class varies massively by route, how the system calculates the flight, and other factors. According to The Points Guy, American Airlines miles can be valued at 1.65 cents each. Passengers can often upgrade to business for around $762, including the $350 copay for some of American’s longest flights and 25,000–30,000 miles. While that is a good deal, the upgrade inventory is limited.

The typical cost of a last-minute business class ‘saver-level award ticket’ in the US is around 45,000 to 70,000 miles on transcontinental routes. This rises to around 60,000 to 90,000 miles on transatlantic routes, around 70,000 to 110,000 miles on transpacific routes to Asia, and around 80,000 to over 120,000 miles on transpacific routes to Australia. Some of these long-distance routes can be over 200,000 miles or even in excess of 400,000 miles.

Business class fares can go in either direction as the algorithm adjusts how it sells the aircraft’s seats. Sometimes, cash business class fares can spike at the last minute. What can surprise many is that while the cash prices for business class seats can spike, award seats sometimes move in the opposite direction and get cheaper or suddenly appear. Dynamic pricing means that miles can be decoupled from cash, allowing loyal passengers to get a good deal.

Book Return Flights When Purchasing Business Class Tickets

Many travelers book last-minute awards as one-way tickets because availability may only appear on one segment. However, when purchasing business class tickets in cash, one of the most important factors is to search for return fares. Airline algorithms are attempting to sort cost-sensitive leisure business class passengers from cost-insensitive corporate business class passengers.

Some of the ways the algorithm does that are by assessing what days of the weekend the ticket is being searched for, how far out the flight is scheduled for, and if the flight is one-way or not. Business travelers are more likely to search for flights during the work week, during work hours, within days of flying, and for one-way tickets. One of the easiest ways to attract lower business class fares is to book return fares. Sometimes, return fares are discounted to the point that the return flights are cheaper than one-way flights.

Another tip when paying cash for a business class fare is to check with partner airlines, which may be offering the same seats at a different rate. Finally, another very important factor is connecting flights. If passengers have regional connecting flights, they might like to search for both the full end-to-end route and the segments individually. Sometimes the fare can be dramatically cheaper when the regional connecting flight is booked separately, even if it is with the same aircraft and airline.

A Strategy That Works, But Is Not Guaranteed

Unfortunately, it is not possible to say exactly how much last-minute business-class award tickets cost, as the picture is just too complicated and dynamic to have a consistent answer. However, it can be said that this strategy sometimes offers deals that are much cheaper than booking well in advance and paying in cash, albeit with the asterisk that it is taking a risk, as the aircraft could book out.

As with searching for the cheapest cash fare, it also helps to check multiple websites, including those of partner airlines, for the best deals. It is common to see an airline’s fares cheaper on a partner’s website than its own, although this can also be the opposite in some cases. Even when the miles are the same through different programs, the taxes and fees can be significantly different.

Booking lower-class tickets and then looking for upgrade options at a lower rate is a strategy that frequently works, albeit on some routes more than others. After all, on high-load routes or in peak times, the aircraft may be more likely to successfully sell its premium seats at full or inflated fares. In these conditions, there is little incentive for the airline to offer discounted upgrade deals to passengers.
