JetBlue Keeps Turning Up The Heat In Fort Lauderdale


JetBlue is making another aggressive play at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, adding Cleveland as a new destination while also boosting frequencies on nine existing routes. The move is significant not just because it adds another city to the map, but because it underlines how important Fort Lauderdale has become to JetBlue’s network strategy, where it is approaching 200 peak daily movements.

The airline said in its announcement that Cleveland will become its 21st new destination launched from FLL in the past year, a striking pace of growth at an airport where JetBlue recently became the number one airline. These latest expansions are also reshaping the competitive balance at FLL at a time when Spirit Airlines has been shrinking, and other low-cost rivals are trying to catch up to JetBlue’s explosive growth.

The headline addition is Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, with daily nonstop service beginning on July 8. JetBlue’s schedule shows Flight 1590 departing Fort Lauderdale at 8:55 PM and arriving in Cleveland at 11:59 PM, while Flight 2289 leaves Cleveland at 8:00 AM and arrives back in Fort Lauderdale at 10:55 AM. JetBlue said the new service is designed to give customers in Northeast Ohio more access to South Florida and onward connections across its expanding FLL network.

Cleveland will become the 21st city that JetBlue has added to its network at Fort Lauderdale over the past year. But the fact that the route already has Frontier Airlines, Spirit and United Airlines operating on it is evidence of a transformation at JetBlue. What started as an opportunistic strategy a year ago of swooping in to fill the void left by Spirit’s financial troubles, has transformed into a greater willingness to leverage its strength at FLL and compete directly with other carriers.

All these new routes mean that JetBlue is entering the summer season with a dramatically different network compared to a year ago. Looking at Cirium Diio data comparing the second quarter of last year (Q2 2025) to this year, JetBlue is set to operate more than 5,000 additional flights to and from FLL in Q2 2026, an increase of 45%. Add in today’s announcement, and from Q3 2026 that equates to nearly 200 daily flights to/from the airline’s South Florida focus city.

The key point is that JetBlue did not seize the top spot at FLL with one giant move. It got there in layers: restoring routes, adding new domestic links, building out its Caribbean and Latin American service, and then increasing frequencies once the network was in place and specific routes were showing higher-than-expected demand. That kind of cumulative growth is how airlines quietly change an airport’s pecking order.

Cleveland may be the headline, but the larger network story are the nine routes that are getting more frequency. JetBlue said it is adding flights from Fort Lauderdale to Atlanta, Aruba, Newark, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Norfolk, Philadelphia, Santo Domingo, and St. Maarten, with the increases beginning in early July.

These expansions matter because frequency growth is often more meaningful than simply adding another dot to the route map. More daily options make a route more attractive to local travelers, improve connectivity across the network, and signal that the airline sees staying power in the market rather than just a seasonal opportunity.

Adding additional daily flights to an established connection is also the clearest indication possible that JetBlue is finding the route to be profitable. So while JetBlue might enjoy its new title of being Fort Lauderdale’s new number one carrier, being able to adjust its network to drive new profitable growth at FLL aligns with its “Jet Forward” strategy to return to profitability, which will retain the support of investors.

Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of network planning at JetBlue, emphasized this when announcing the new network developments:

“These latest additions reflect our ongoing strategy to build an undeniably strong and relevant network in Fort Lauderdale by adding both new destinations and more frequencies where our customers want to fly. As we continue to grow in Fort Lauderdale, we’re offering customers more choice, more flexibility and a more connected network.”

FLL’s Low-Cost Hierarchy Is Being Rewritten

The broader story here is that Fort Lauderdale’s budget-airline structure is changing rapidly. Spirit, long the defining force at FLL, is down about 2,000 flights year-over-year in the Q2 comparison, a decline of roughly 14%. That aligns with the airline’s prolonged financial and restructuring turmoil and the resulting reductions in its fleet size, which has forced it to pull back capacity and reduce its footprint in some core markets.

JetBlue has been the clearest beneficiary with its 45% growth, but it is not the only one moving in. Frontier has also expanded sharply, albeit from a low base. Allegiant Air has continued to grow selectively, and Breeze Airways has begun serving Fort Lauderdale for the first time. The result is that FLL is becoming less of a one-carrier low-cost stronghold and more of a fragmented battleground, with several airlines now trying to exploit openings created by Spirit’s retreat.

JetBlue’s march at Fort Lauderdale is certainly not finished. The carrier’s president, Marty St. George, recently said that the airline had “more stuff to come,” and explicitly tied JetBlue’s expansion to gate capacity opening up as Spirit pulled back, while FLL itself is also in the middle of adding a new Terminal 5. In other words, the runway for further growth is still there, and JetBlue’s rise to number one is not just a company story — it is evidence that FLL’s budget-carrier hierarchy is being rewritten in real time.
