Prior to the reelection of U.S. President Donald Trump, Canada had a very well-functioning relationship with the United States with easy mutual commercial access, and very loose mobility rules, in addition to strong military and political partnerships. None of that involved formally submitting Canada to direct American governance, the way EU membership would. Whatever problems Canada faces with a Trump-led America, EU membership would also prevent Ottawa from signing its own comprehensive trade deal with the U.S., meaning Canada would rely entirely on the EU for a trade agreement with its southern neighbour, or any other country for that matter.
