Mersey River wind farm, veteran rehabilitation contract and justice issues on the agenda

What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

A trio of senior executives with the Canada Infrastructure Bank, including CEO Ehren Cory, managing director Sashen Guneratna and Frédéric Duguay, will fire up their webcams for a virtual question-and-answer session at TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITIES as MPs launch a self-initiated probe of the $206 million loan to Nova Scotia-based Renewell Energy, which, as CBC News reports, “is trying to break up Nova Scotia Power’s monopoly on the electricity market” by building a new wind farm near Mersey River in Queens County, N.S. (4:30 p.m.)

Meanwhile, VETERANS AFFAIRS members will get the chance to cross-examine Veterans Affairs Minister Jill McKnight over the $573-million contract for rehabilitation programs awarded to Partners in Canadian Veterans Rehabilitation Services, which, according to a recent report by the Toronto Star, has left “some veterans facing severe mental health issues are drowning in the program’s bureaucracy, being pressured to change service providers, given inadequate care and facing threats to their benefit.” Also on the witness list: Veterans Ombud Nishika Jardine and a panel of senior departmental officials. (4:30 p.m.)

Over at JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS, MPs will hear from the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund, Sagesse Domestic Violence Prevention Society and Canadian Policy Association as they go through the fine print of Justice Minister Sean Fraser’s proposal to strengthen the laws on intimate party violence, as well as boost child protection and address systemic delays within the court system. (4:30 p.m.)

Also this afternoon:

  • CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION members hold a panel discussion with representatives of the Hong Kong Pathway Ontario Committee, Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Société nationale de l’Acadie and University of Ottawa professor Luisa Veronis as they continue to examine the current state of the immigration system. (4:30 p.m.)
  • PUBLIC ACCOUNTS members are on track to wrap up their review of Conservative MP Adam Chambers’ proposal for a debt forgiveness registry. (4:30 p.m.)
  • FISHERIES AND OCEANS members get a briefing on “recreational and traditional fishing for softshell clam.” (4:30 p.m.)

On the Senate side, Fraser presents his plan to overhaul bail and sentencing laws to LEGAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS members. (4:15 p.m.)

Rounding out the roster, Secretary of State (International Development) Randeep Sarai updates FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE members on “Canada’s international assistance priorities.” (4:15 p.m.)
