The B.C. coroner’s office is investigating after a person died following an avalanche in a remote area in the far northwestern part of the province Sunday.

B.C. RCMP say police got a satellite SOS Sunday afternoon reporting an avalanche. It happened near Pleasant Camp and the Klehini River, close to the B.C.-Alaska border.

A message with one of the SOS signals said a person was unconscious and receiving CPR.

Police in Atlin, B.C., approximately 500 kilometres east of the location, and local search and rescue crews, sent a helicopter to extract the party of five people in the area.

Unfortunately, one was deceased, and the other four were uninjured, based on the information that I have,” said Sgt. Vanessa Munn, with B.C. RCMP.

Munn said she did not have any information about who the people were or the name of the person who died.

But she said the four other people in the group were unhurt.

Avalanche Canada is rating the avalanche risk in the area as “considerable.”
