Boston Red Sox pitcher Johan Oviedo has been reported as the frontrunner for the fifth and final spot in the team’s starting rotation multiple times through spring training.

Following his final tuneup before Opening Day on Thursday, Oviedo made a surprising admission regarding his status on the roster.

“Oviedo said he doesn’t know yet if he’ll be in the big leagues to start the year, or the role he’d have if he is in the big leagues, but he’s encouraged by his health and feels ready to contribute at the start of the season,” Alex Speier of The Boston Globe posted on Bluesky.

Oviedo allowed six runs (all earned) on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings pitched during the Red Sox’s 9-6 loss against the Minnesota Twins on Monday.

Reigning AL Cy Young runner-up Garrett Crochet and three-time All-Star Sonny Gray are slated to open the regular season at the front of Boston’s starting rotation, with Brayan Bello and Ranger Suarez filling the third and fourth spots.

Mac Cerullo wrote following Monday’s contest that Oviedo’s “next outing will probably be on Saturday” during the Red Sox’s third game of the regular season against the Cincinnati Reds.

Oviedo’s performance vs. Minnesota closed “what was otherwise a highly successful spring,” according to Cerullo.

The 28-year-old finished spring training with a 4.91 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 17 strikeouts across 14 2/3 innings pitched (five starts).
