Even if you have only a passing interest in skincare, chances are you’ve heard of collagen. A naturally occurring protein, it acts as the skin’s scaffolding, but levels begin to decline from our mid-twenties, which is why it remains one of the most talked-about skincare ingredients for mature skin in beauty today.
Enter collagen creams: a go-to moisturiser for those looking to boost hydration and achieve plumper, smoother-looking skin. And yet, according to Dr Sophie Shotter, founder of Illuminate Skin Clinic, the most effective formulas don’t always contain collagen itself, at least not if your goal is to meaningfully support your skin’s own collagen production.
With so many options on the market, the question remains, which collagen cream, and more importantly, which ingredients are actually worth your attention? Let’s break it down.
What Is Collagen?
“Collagen is the main structural protein in the skin, making up around 70 to 80% of the dermis. It acts like a scaffold, giving skin its strength, firmness and resilience, while also supporting hydration and elasticity,” explains Dr Shotter.
Think of it as the framework that holds your skin together. Without it, skin loses shape, plumpness and becomes more prone to sagging. The bad news is collagen isn’t permanent. “From our mid-20s onwards, collagen production naturally declines by about 1-1.5% per year, and existing collagen becomes more fragmented. This is what leads to fine lines, laxity and thinning skin over time,” adds Dr Shotter.
Understanding this slow-burning process is key to appreciating why a preventive and supportive skincare routine matters.
What Do Collagen Creams Do?
It’s tempting to think that slathering collagen on the skin somehow rebuilds what’s lost, but the truth is that topically applied collagen molecules are too large to penetrate deeply.
“Collagen creams primarily function as hydrating and barrier-supporting products, rather than directly replacing lost collagen,” says Dr Shotter. “They can make the skin look better, but they don’t rebuild the underlying collagen structure,” she adds.
While collagen creams don’t literally replace lost collagen like for like, their formulations can still make a real difference in how your skin looks day to day. Many collagen creams pair collagen with hydrating agents, emollients and those all-important supporting actives to boost overall skin health and stimulate collagen production.
The Best Collagen Creams
1. Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF 30
Elemis
Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF 30
This is the Elemis product that pretty much put collagen creams on the map when it first launched in 2003. At the time, moisturisers tended to be heavy and rich, so its gel‑cream texture felt like a revelation. I love it because it feels light on the skin but is seriously hydrating, and my complexion always feels primed and protected, thanks to the SPF30.
Today, it has quickly become the secret weapon in beauty editors’ kits, and it has several celebrity fans, including Kate Hudson, Catherine Zeta‑Jones and Jourdan Dunn. And as for the skin tech? It contains a Mediterranean algae called Padina Pavonica, which works to support the skin’s natural collagen while boosting moisture levels for a plumper, firmer and suppler complexion. Plus, it’s a great glow-boosting moisturiser. Over time, it actually feels like your skin holds onto that “just right” glow longer than most creams I’ve tried.
Pros
- Lovely gel-like texture
- Brilliant all-rounder
- Added SPF
- Soothing for sensitive skin
2. Dermalogica Pro-Collagen Banking Water Cream
Dermalogica
Pro-Collagen Banking Water Cream
Oily skin can be tricky to hydrate because the last thing you want is a cream that feels heavy, greasy or like it’s just sitting on the surface. While it can be tempting to skip moisturiser altogether, all that happens is your skin overcompensates and boom, more shine, more breakouts. That’s where Dermalogica Pro Collagen Balancing Cream is a bit of a hero. It’s light, almost airy, but still somehow deeply hydrating. It sinks in fast, mattifies in all the right places and leaves my skin feeling balanced rather than slick. As for those all important actives? There’s a powerful peptide blend to strengthen skin and prevent collagen levels from depleting, while red algae and white clover give your skin a firmer, lifted look.
Pros
- Lightweight
- Great for oily skin
- Deeply hydrating
Cons
- Again, it has a more luxury price point
3. Paula’s Choice Pro-Collagen Peptide Plumping Moisturiser
Paula’s Choice
Pro-Collagen Peptide Plumping Moisturiser
With its peptide‑rich formula, I found this cream gives skin a noticeable shot of plumpness, but you do have to be patient as it doesn’t happen overnight. The more visible improvements in firmness, bounce and plumping generally become noticeable with consistent use over about four weeks. As for instant use, I like how it turns the hydration dial up a little higher, so that skin looks a little smoother.
Pros
- A little goes a long way
- Feels luxurious to use
- Works on the epidermis
Cons
- Not the best for oily skin
- Takes a little while to show results
4. Oskia Nutri-Active Day Cream
Oskia
Nutri-Active Day Cream
I’ve long been a fan of Oskia and this day cream is a really impressive. Formulated to do more than just hydrate, it’s designed to support the processes that keep skin firm and functioning properly. What sets it apart is its focus on nutrients that feed the skin at a cellular level. There’s MSM (a bioavailable sulphur compound that’s essential for collagen production and helps to support the structural integrity of the skin over time), a blend of amino acids, vitamins and minerals, which means you’ve got a formula that helps create the right conditions for collagen synthesis, rather than just sitting on the surface.
Pros
- A great lightweight day cream
- Good for all round skin health
Cons
- Some might dislike the fragrance
5. Sisley Night Cream With Collagen
Sisley
Night Cream With Collagen
It sounds ridiculous, but using this night cream feels like cosseting your skin in a soft, warm duvet—it’s honestly dreamy. What I love is that it works on two levels: the high levels of soluble collagen help target and correct visible signs of ageing, while the naturally derived woodmallow revitalises the epidermis, giving my skin that refreshed, younger-looking glow by morning. It’s indulgent, effective and one of those creams that actually makes you look forward to bedtime.
Pros
- Fragrance-free
- Helps to even skin tone
- Great for firming
Cons
- A much higher price point
6. Medik8 Advanced Pro-Collagen+ Peptide Cream
Medik8
Advanced Pro-Collagen+ Peptide Cream
This is the kind of collagen cream I reach for when my skin is feeling a little reactive, but I still want results. A lot of “pro-collagen” formulas rely on strong actives that can tip sensitive skin over the edge, but this one takes a smarter, more supportive approach. Instead of pushing the skin too hard, it creates the right environment for collagen to thrive. The formula combines growth factor technology, peptides and a NAD+ booster to help support collagen and elastin, so you’re not just getting surface-level hydration, you’re actually reinforcing the skin’s foundation.
Pros
- Great for sensitive skin
- A real multi-tasking formula
7. CeraVe Skin Renewing Peptide Cream
CeraVe
Skin Renewing Peptide Cream
This collagen cream works by combining peptides (which act as signalling molecules to encourage the skin to maintain and support its natural collagen) with ceramides that strengthen the skin barrier. Like the rest of the CeraVe range, it’s simple yet effective and a great choice if you don’t want to part with too much cash.
Pros
- Great price point
- Great for dry skin
Cons
- Not the best for oily skin as contains shea butter
- The pot is very small
8 Facegym Active Collagen Wonder Moisturiser
Facegym
Active Collagen Wonder Moisturiser
I’ve used this product for about a year now and can say that it’s one of the best. The thing you need to know about this product is that it’s built around a really smart mix of collagen fragments and peptides that don’t just sit on the skin. Enter biotech collagen fragments, which are designed to mimic the collagen naturally found in your skin. Rather than trying to “replace” collagen (which topical products can’t really do), they act as signals, encouraging your skin to produce more of its own for improved elasticity. Alongside that, there’s a tripeptide complex, made up of short chains of amino acids that essentially tell your skin to step up collagen production, helping to smooth over time.
Pros
- Contains human-like biotech collagen
- Hydrating
- Good for all skin types
Cons
- Round pot is a little bulky
9. Renew + Me Nightly Active Treatment
Renew + Me
Nightly Active Treatment
Renew + Me has recently formulated its base cream, and it’s a winner if you have dry skin or prefer a rich cream. In terms of what’s new, there’s hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and oat kernel extract to strengthen the barrier. On top of that, a ceramide lipid complex replenishes essential lipids, helping skin stay firm, protected and resilient. Then, depending on your consultation, your dermatologist will add your actives such as tretinoin, which is a powerful active for helping to stimulate collagen production.
Pros
- Fast-acting
- Very nourishing
- Good for dry skin
- Bespoke to your skin’s needs
10. Eve Lom Time Retreat Daily Rejuvenating Cream
Eve Lom
Time Retreat Daily Rejuvenating Cream
Formulated with liposome encapsulated retinol, this face cream really knows what it’s doing when it comes to leaning on actives that help to stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production. Over time, it leaves skin feeling firming, looking plumper and appearing more radiant and healthy. It’s a real wonder product.
Pros
- A multi-tasking formula
- Gentle for a retinol cream
- Feels spa-like and hydrating
Cons
- Expensive
- Not suitable for those who avoid retinol
How Do Collagen Creams Work?
Collagen creams work in two main ways. Firstly, they provide surface hydration and a film-forming effect. Collagen acts as a humectant and film-former, drawing moisture into the outer skin layer and creating a light barrier. “This can make fine lines appear less visible. Many collagen creams have supporting ingredients to do the real ‘active’ work,” reveals Dr Shotter.
“A well-formulated collagen cream may also include ingredients like: retinoids to stimulate collagen production, vitamin C to support collagen synthesis and to protect against breakdown, peptides to signal the skin to produce more collagen and SPF (in daytime products) to prevent collagen degradation,” she adds.
It’s these supporting actives that can drive long-term skin improvement.
Collagen Creams vs. Collagen Supplements
If you’re wondering which is better, collagen creams or collagen supplements, then you’re not alone. “This is a common source of confusion because they work in completely different ways,” says Dr Shotter.
“Collagen creams work on the surface to improve hydration, smoothness and overall texture. They give short-term cosmetic benefits but don’t directly increase dermal collagen levels,” she explains. “Collagen supplements, on the other hand, are taken orally, usually in the form of hydrolysed collagen peptides. These peptides are broken down in the gut and can act as building blocks and signals to stimulate the body’s own collagen production,” adds Dr Shotter.
Clinical studies suggest that consistent use of certain high-quality collagen supplements over 8–12 weeks can improve skin elasticity, hydration and wrinkle depth. But not all supplements are created equal. There’s wide variability in formulation, quality and clinical evidence, so choosing a brand backed by rigorous studies is essential. “Absolute Collagen has been tested in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with over 30,000 data points demonstrating efficacy,” says Dr Shotter, of a supplement that she recommends.
Essentially, creams and supplements aren’t competing; they actually play nicely together. A good collagen cream gives your skin that instant boost of hydration and smoothness, while a collagen supplement can help support the deeper structural stuff over time. Pairing the two, along with a solid skincare routine and a little SPF love, really gives your skin the best shot at staying plump, bouncy and generally looking like it’s thriving.
