The Airbus A320neo family is the most popular commercial aircraft available on the market. The Airbus A320neo costs around $113.5 million at list price in 2025, but most airlines in 2026 are paying significantly less, often 20% to 50% below that figure, depending on order size, delivery slots, and market conditions. The reason for this massive discount is the large differences between an aircraft’s list price and its final sale price, driven by negotiations and the airlines’ or manufacturers’ bargaining power.

According to industry sources, the list price of an A320neo aircraft in 2025 was $113.5 million dollars, compared to $110.6 million in 2018. For the large and popular Airbus A321neo, the list price was $132.5 million in 2025, while the smaller and unpopular Airbus A319neo had a list price of only $104 million that same year. However, to understand what an aircraft costs, it is important to distinguish between a manufacturer’s list price and the actual price an airline ends up paying. The list price of an aircraft is the publicly announced figure, set by an aircraft manufacturer, such as Boeing or Airbus. However, these prices are heavily negotiated, resulting in large discounts in some cases of up to 50%, according to some sources.

Often, the size of the discount is influenced by the order size, with the largest orders receiving higher discounts. In essence, the list price is thus a starting point for negotiation, whereas the actual price is the negotiated market value, with an airline’s bargaining power heavily influencing the actual price paid. However, macro factors play an important role as well. Changes in demand, production rates, geopolitical tensions, and economic cycles all influence the actual price of an aircraft and, to a large extent, also the bargaining power of an airline. A profitable and strong-performing airline industry, driving higher demand for new aircraft, will strengthen Boeing’s negotiating position, while an industry downturn could force Boeing to discount aircraft.

Another reason manufacturers leave room for negotiation between the list price and the actual price is inflation. Since airlines order new aircraft years in advance, an important reason for list prices to be higher compared to actual prices is to help manufacturers mitigate inflation. Despite all of this, the A320neo and, even more so, the A321neo are incredibly popular and have a massive order backlog, providing Airbus with perhaps the strongest bargaining position. The aircraft family’s popularity was also recently underscored by aircraft leasing firm AerCap with an order for 100 A320neo aircraft. However, as is often the case with aircraft orders, the negotiated actual prices and other financing terms are not communicated. At the time of the order, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, who presently holds the position of Executive Vice President of Commercial Aircraft Sales at Airbus, said the following:

“This order is the largest single direct order for the type ever placed by AerCap with Airbus, and is a powerful endorsement of the A320neo Family’s enduring value and market-leading performance.”

What Are The Five Largest A320neo Operators?

There are over a hundred different airlines worldwide operating a fleet of A320neo aircraft in various quantities. As of writing, however, there are only two airlines operating more than a hundred aircraft of the type. The largest operator of the type is Indian low-cost carrier Indigo with 195 aircraft. Besides being the largest A320neo operator, IndiGo is also India’s largest airline, making up over 60% of the country’s domestic market share. Over the next decade, IndiGo is only expected to grow further and retain its dominant position, as the airline is expected to take delivery of over 235 A320neos, as well as a massive 558 Airbus A321neos and 68 A321XLRs.

The second-largest operator of the aircraft type, China Eastern Airlines, currently has 120 A320neo’s in its fleet, and is expecting to take delivery of 17 additional aircraft. The Chinese SkyTeam is the world’s sixth-largest airline by fleet size and second largest in China, with the A320 family forming the backbone of its domestic operations. However, this reliance on the A320 might reduce over the next few years, as the airline is, interestingly, one of the largest customers for the Chinese-built Comac C919, often flagged as a serious competitor for the A320 as well as the Boeing 737.

Other large operators of the type are Indian flag-carrier Air India, with 94 A320neo aircraft in its fleet and another 90 on order. In addition, the airline also has an outstanding order for 210 A321neo aircraft, including 15 A321XLRs. In the United States, the largest operators of the A320neo are ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs), Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines, with 91 and 82 aircraft respectively. And while not the largest A320neo operator, the largest overall Airbus A320 family operator in the United States and the world is American Airlines with 487 aircraft divided over 5 A320 variants.

The first Airbus A320 was designed from a mostly clean sheet and first took to the skies back in 1987. This is a significant difference compared to the aircraft’s biggest direct competitor, the Boeing 737, which was designed two decades earlier and largely based on design elements of the even older Boeing 727 and Boeing 707. While the Boeing 737 has evolved since then, at its core it is still very similar to the early 737 models from the 1960s. For Airbus, this appears to have created a significant advantage, and over the years, its A320 family has taken the crown from the Boeing 737. In October 2019, the A320 family had already surpassed the B737 family in total orders, and in September 2025, the A320 family surpassed the B737 family in deliveries. As of February 2026, 19,711 A320 family aircraft have been ordered, with 12,512 delivered to airlines worldwide.

Following the original A320’s first flight in 1987, the aircraft entered commercial service with Air France a bit more than a year later, in April 1988. Six years after this, in 1994, the first stretched A321 variant was delivered, followed by the shorter A319 in 1996, and the smallest variant, the A318, in 2003. However, this latter never became a commercial success, and only 80 A318 aircraft have been delivered, with Air France being the type’s largest operator, and the last remaining after Romanian flag carrier Tarom retired its A318s in 2024. The most famous operator of the A318 is perhaps British Airways, with its all-business class A318 service from London City (LCY) to New York (JFK), which ended in the midst of the pandemic.

Whereas the A318 is the largest commercial failure of the A320 family, its largest success was announced back in 2010, the A320neo, “new engine option.” For Airbus, this second generation of A320 family aircraft has been a massive success, having received 11,605 orders as of February 2026. Especially the A321neo and its sub-variants, the A321XLR and A321LR, are favored by airlines worldwide, with orders for these aircraft models totaling over 7,000. Part of the reason for the success of these aircraft is their additional seating capacity in a growing and increasingly congested market. On the other hand, this has also resulted in the smaller A319neo following in the footsteps of the A318, having received fewer than 100 orders.

While the regular A320neo is already popular on its own, the stretched A321neo is even more popular when looking at Airbus’ order backlog. The new engines of the A321neo have improved the aircraft’s efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by around 20%. Furthermore, the range has been significantly extended compared to the A321ceo, which, combined with Airbus’ Sharklets, allows the aircraft to now operate transatlantic flights once reserved for widebodies. This provides airlines with the efficiency and flexibility to operate medium- to long-haul flights using regular narrowbody aircraft.

Since the A321neo shares many common features and characteristics, including the flight deck, with the rest of the A320neo family, this results in significant economies of scale advantages when operating multiple different aircraft from the family. The A321XLR takes this even further with larger fuel tanks that extend their range to nearly 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 km), enough to connect city pairs such as New York–Rome or Chicago–Lisbon nonstop. This will provide airlines like United Airlines and American Airlines with the flexibility to open new long-thin routes profitably.
