Basketball Classics Brings Retro Arcade Hoops to Xbox

There’s a gap in basketball gaming that has existed for decades. Simulation titles ask for hours of commitment. Arcade games sacrifice depth for spectacle. What nobody made — until now — is the basketball game that sits right in between: fast, readable, and genuinely deep. Basketball Classics is that game and it’s coming to Xbox.

Built by two-person indie studio Namo Gamo and published by Acclaim, Basketball Classics is a retro 5-on-5 arcade basketball game born from a pure love of the sport and the classic games of the 8-bit era. It has been earning a devoted fanbase on PC since 2019. Now, for the first time, you can play it on Xbox.

Three buttons control everything. You can learn Basketball Classics in minutes. But the strategy runs deep. The play-calling system lets you pause mid-game to pull up a menu of options, call a timeout, set a play, or run a pick-and-roll on the fly. Want to create space for your shooter? Set the screen, wait for your defender to get caught, and fire from the arc. Trying to attack the paint? Call the fast break or run a post play to exploit a size mismatch. Every possession gives you real decisions to make, and that keeps games feeling different every time.

Player attributes matter too: put a sharpshooter against a weak perimeter defender and you’ll drain threes all night. Get the matchups wrong and you’ll pay for it. Before any game mode, you can open the Roster Editor from the main menu to build your lineup and scout your options. Each player is rated across eight attributes: Defence, Offense, Strength, Pass, Seal, Block, Rebound and Dunk, so you can target mismatches before tip-off. Need more firepower? Complete Story Mode stages to unlock additional players and add them to your roster.

Drive to the basket and you enter a dunk mini-game: high, mid, or low, your choice against the defender’s counter. Elite players bring up to ten moves. Read the defender right and you get the poster. Read it wrong and you get blocked. It happens in seconds and it never gets old.

With over 1,000 players across 175-plus teams spanning decades of pro basketball, you have more history to explore than you can get through in a weekend.

Work through Story Mode and you unlock the Legends, the greatest players and teams from across eras. Progression is built around a deep set of in-game challenges: rack up steals, sink a quota of three-pointers, pile up blocks. Clearing them is how you earn the sport’s all-time greats. It’s a tribute to the athletes who defined the sport, built into the heart of the game. Master every part of your game to earn your place among them.

Acclaim helped define gaming in the 90s. Now back with a fresh mission to champion bold indie creators, the new Acclaim is making its statement by bringing Basketball Classics to Xbox. Great games, built with passion, reaching the audience they deserve.
