Over the past decade, first class in commercial aviation has evolved into something far beyond simply a larger seat at the front of the plane. While many airlines have removed first class entirely as business class products have improved, the carriers that still offer it have pushed the experience to extraordinary levels. Modern first class suites now feature private rooms with sliding doors, separate beds, large entertainment systems, and personalized dining, creating an experience that often rivals private jet travel.
There are now many remarkable first class products flying around the world, and it would be impossible to cover them all in a single article. This list focuses on five of the most innovative and luxurious suites available today, but several other airlines also offer exceptional first class experiences. Notable examples include the products offered by ANA, Cathay Pacific, and Lufthansa, each of which continues to push the boundaries of premium air travel in its own way.
What Defines The Modern First Class
In commercial aviation, first class has traditionally represented the most exclusive and luxurious product an airline could offer. Historically, this meant larger seats, more attentive service, and higher-quality dining than business or economy cabins. As business class has moved closer to what first class once offered, several airlines have chosen to eliminate traditional first class cabins entirely. Instead, they focus on building a high-end business class experience that delivers similar comfort while allowing airlines to fit more premium seats into the aircraft.
At the same time, the airlines that still offer first class have pushed the concept to an entirely different level. Modern first class suites now resemble private rooms rather than airline seats, with features such as floor-to-ceiling doors, double beds, personal wardrobes, and even onboard showers on some aircraft. These products are designed not just to offer a comfortable flight, but to create a highly exclusive travel experience that differentiates an airline’s brand at the very top end of the market.
Etihad Airways: The Residence
Among the most extraordinary first class products ever introduced is The Residence offered by 
Etihad Airways onboard its Airbus A380 fleet. Unlike traditional first class suites that focus on a single large seat, The Residence is effectively a private apartment in the sky designed for one or two passengers. When it debuted in 2014, it became the only commercial airline cabin featuring multiple separate rooms within a single suite.
The suite occupies roughly 125 square feet at the front of the A380’s upper deck and is divided into three separate spaces: a living room, a bedroom, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Passengers first enter a private lounge area with a leather sofa and large entertainment screen, which can also be used for dining during the flight. A short hallway then leads to a fully separate bedroom featuring a double bed and luxury bedding, while the bathroom includes a shower.
Beyond the physical space, the experience is designed to resemble private aviation rather than traditional commercial flying. Residence passengers receive highly personalized service, often including dedicated cabin crew attention and customized dining throughout the flight. Combined with access to premium lounges and the privacy of an enclosed three-room suite, the product represents one of the most ambitious first class experiences ever introduced by a commercial airline.
Etihad’s A380 Residence: A Good Use Of Space Or Overindulgent?
Etihad, much like its Middle Eastern rivals Emirates and Qatar Airways, operates the Airbus A380 on its busiest routes, although, over the years, as Simple Flying reported earlier today, it has removed the type from six corridors. The Abu Dhabi-based UAE flag carrier is unique among these airlines in offering ‘The Residence,’ a lavish multi-room suite at the front of the first class cabin. There is little doubt that this is an unforgettable place to spend a flight, but how much is too much?
Some might argue that this suite is overindulgent, and that, even on the longest flight, no passenger needs three rooms to themself, especially when Etihad’s existing business and first class seats on the A380 are among the best in the sky. On the other hand, however, novelty sells, and this USP is likely a factor in attracting high-value flyers to Etihad. As such, while I don’t see the need myself, I can see why Etihad does. Emirates First Class
Emirates offers one of the most technologically advanced first class products in commercial aviation, particularly on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Known as the “Game Changer” First Class, the cabin features just six suites arranged in a 1-1-1 layout, giving each passenger a fully private space rather than a traditional airline seat. Each suite includes floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, allowing passengers to completely close themselves off from the rest of the cabin and creating one of the most private experiences available on a commercial flight.
The suites incorporate several unusual features rarely seen on commercial aircraft. Passengers can recline into a “zero-gravity” seat position designed to reduce pressure on the body during long flights, while integrated lighting and temperature controls allow travelers to personalize their environment. Middle suites even include high-definition “virtual windows,” which display live exterior camera feeds so passengers seated away from the fuselage can still enjoy the outside view.
Emirates also offers a different first class experience on its Airbus A380 fleet. While these suites are not fully enclosed like the Boeing 777 version, they still deliver an extremely luxurious experience with sliding doors, large personal spaces, and the ability to convert the seat into a fully flat bed. A major highlight is access to the aircraft’s onboard shower spa, allowing passengers to shower at 40,000 feet.

Japan Airlines offers one of the most refined first class experiences in commercial aviation, particularly onboard its long-haul Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The cabin, often referred to as the “JAL Suite,” features a compact and exclusive layout with just eight seats arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, ensuring every passenger has direct aisle access and ample personal space. Boeing 777-300ER first class cabins are designed to feel more like a private lounge than a typical airline seat, emphasizing comfort and spaciousness rather than ultra-dense layouts.
Each suite is exceptionally wide and converts into a fully flat bed measuring roughly 78 inches in length, allowing passengers to rest comfortably on long intercontinental flights. The seat itself resembles a large armchair and includes an ottoman that can double as a companion seat for dining or conversation. Large entertainment screens, extensive storage compartments, and multiple power outlets are integrated into the suite’s console, creating a functional environment for both relaxation and productivity.
While the current 777 first class design focuses on spacious seating rather than fully enclosed doors, Japan Airlines has introduced an even more modern first class suite on its Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. These newer suites offer greater privacy and a room-like design intended to resemble a private personal space in the sky. The combination of large seating areas, high-quality service, and Japanese-inspired attention to detail continues to make Japan Airlines one of the standout first class experiences available in 2026.

Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines operates one of the most famous first class products in aviation with its Suites cabin on the Airbus A380. Instead of a traditional airline seat, each passenger receives a fully enclosed private suite located at the front of the aircraft’s upper deck. The suites are arranged in a spacious 1-1 configuration, providing significant personal space and privacy compared to most first class cabins.
One of the defining features of the Suites product is that the seat and bed are completely separate. Passengers relax in a large leather armchair that can swivel and recline, while a separate flat bed folds down from the wall and is made up by the crew with a mattress, pillows, and duvet. A large 32-inch entertainment screen, personal storage areas, and adjustable lighting controls are all integrated into the suite, creating a space that feels more like a private room than a traditional airline seat.
For couples traveling together, two adjacent suites can even be combined into a double bed configuration by lowering the divider between them. This creates a unique experiences in commercial aviation, allowing two passengers to share a bed inside a private suite in the sky. Combined with high-end dining, luxury amenities, and extremely attentive service, the A380 Suites remain one of the most innovative first class products available today.
Air France
Air France offers one of the most refined and exclusive first class experiences in commercial aviation with its La Première product. Available on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, the cabin is intentionally extremely small, with just four suites arranged in a 1-2-1 layout. This limited seating allows the airline to focus heavily on privacy and personalized service, giving passengers an experience closer to private aviation than a typical airline cabin.
The newest La Première suites feature a unique design centered around a separate seat and chaise lounge rather than a single reclining seat. Passengers relax in a forward-facing armchair for dining or entertainment, while the chaise lounge opposite that can be converted into a fully flat bed measuring roughly two meters long. Each suite occupies about 3.5 square meters of space and spans five aircraft windows, making it one of the largest first class suites currently flying.
Privacy is provided through thick floor-to-ceiling curtains rather than rigid sliding doors, creating a quiet, lounge-like atmosphere. The suites also include large entertainment screens, wireless charging, multiple power outlets, and generous storage space, including a personal wardrobe. Combined with Michelin-inspired dining, luxury amenities, and exclusive ground services, La Première represents one of the most elegant and service-focused first class experiences available in 2026.
