Severe weather systems across several regions of the United States disrupted air travel from March 15 into March 16, forcing multiple major airports to slow or pause flight operations, says Fox 32 Chicago. Airports, including Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), 
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), experienced delays, cancellations, and temporary ground stops. Snow and ice in the Midwest combined with thunderstorms in the Southeast and Gulf Coast regions to limit runway capacity and safe aircraft movement. As a result, aviation authorities introduced traffic restrictions that disrupted schedules across the national air travel network.
When several large hub airports face weather-related disruptions simultaneously, the effects quickly spread across the US aviation system. Airlines rely heavily on these hubs to move passengers between connecting flights, meaning delays in one location can cascade across multiple routes. During the disruptions, hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled as airlines adjusted operations to maintain safety. Travelers across the country experienced schedule changes as aircraft, crews, and passengers were repositioned.
Severe Weather Disrupts Multiple Major US Airport Hubs
Chicago O’Hare International Airport was among the first major facilities affected as snowfall and icy conditions slowed operations. The airport is one of the busiest in the world, handling more than 70 million passengers annually and serving as a major hub for United Airlines and American Airlines. Snow accumulation and runway treatment operations reduced the number of aircraft that could safely take off or land each hour. To manage congestion, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) halted departures bound for the airport until conditions improved, resulting in nearly 500 flights canceled at O’Hare Airport.
Further south, thunderstorms passing through North Carolina caused disruptions at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Charlotte is a critical hub for American Airlines and typically handles more than 1,400 aircraft movements daily. Severe weather limited arrival capacity, forcing aircraft to remain at their departure airports. Similar problems occurred at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, where winter weather prompted cancellations and required additional aircraft deicing procedures before departures. An FAA spokesperson said:
“Severe weather on the East Coast is causing flight delays and cancellations at airports. Be sure to check your flight status with your airline before leaving home.”

Ground stops are a traffic management strategy used by aviation authorities to prevent aircraft from departing when a destination airport cannot safely receive them. However, the measure can lead to delays spreading across airline networks as flights wait for clearance to depart.
Large hub airports such as Chicago O’Hare and Charlotte Douglas play a major role in connecting passengers between domestic and international routes. Chicago O’Hare alone handles more than 2,400 daily flights under normal conditions, while Charlotte Douglas ranks among the busiest airports worldwide by aircraft movements. When operations slow at these facilities, airlines must quickly adjust schedules and reposition aircraft and crews. This process can take several hours, especially when multiple hubs are affected simultaneously.
Weather can be a significant cause of flight delays in the United States, with data from 2025 showing that extreme weather accounted for around 6.9% of flight delays. Thunderstorms are particularly disruptive because they can block major flight corridors and force aircraft to take longer routes around storm cells. In winter, snow and freezing temperatures require aircraft deicing and runway clearing, both of which reduce airport capacity. These operational limitations make large weather systems especially challenging for airlines to manage.

The airport serves as a major hub for United and normally processes more than 40 million passengers each year. Lightning and heavy rain can temporarily halt ramp operations, preventing aircraft from being loaded, refueled, or pushed back from gates. These safety measures often lead to departure delays until weather conditions improve.
Airlines typically begin recovery efforts once storms pass and runway capacity returns to normal. Aircraft and crews that were delayed earlier in the day must be repositioned so that later flights can depart. Depending on the scale of the disruption, airlines may require several operational cycles to fully restore schedules. Passengers are usually encouraged to monitor airline updates and check flight status before traveling during major weather events.
Although severe weather regularly disrupts air travel, modern forecasting systems and air traffic management tools help airlines anticipate problems and adjust operations in advance. Even so, large multi-region storms can still create widespread disruption across the national aviation system.
