Slay the Spire 2 records huge week-one sales, as the devs expand the board game (finally letting you play as the bosses)

Slay the Spire 2 has been one of Steam’s best selling games for days, and now we know what that translates to in terms of actual sales. Developer Mega Crit has announced that Slay the Spire 2 has sold a massive 3 million copies already.

The post announcing the sales was made on Friday, 13th March. Slay the Spire 2 was released 5th March. So that’s roughly a week’s worth of sales recorded.

“Slay the Spire 2 has been out for merely a week and we have already hit 3,000,000 units sold with more than 25,000,000 runs attempted!!” wrote Mega Crit community manager Demi in an update. “(At least a few million are missing from that last datapoint as we started collecting these metrics a bit after launch. So… wow.) Our team has been extremely excited to see so many people’s enthusiasm for what we’ve been working on for the past five years – but our journey is just beginning!”

Mega Crit reiterated that big additions like alternate versions of Acts 2 and 3 are in development, as are more cards and events. A more immediate list of things to tackle includes: Steam Workshop support (for mods), multiplayer quality of life features, Twitch integration, more art, phobia accessibility options, a revamp of the badge/scoring system and a friends-only leaderboard. A new beta branch has been added on Steam for people who want to test things.

“In terms of a release cadence, we don’t want to commit to a strict schedule,” Demi stressed. “New content and balance changes will come to the main branch whenever we feel they’re ready. The beta branch will have more frequent updates in the meantime!”

Mega Crit also took the opportunity to announce an upcoming Kickstarter campaign for Slay the Spire board game expansion Downfall. This will apparently let us play as some of the game’s infamous bosses, and there are a couple pictured on the game’s box art. I’ve heard good things about the board game, incidentally, though I’ve not played it myself. It was an interpretation that cemented the idea of co-op in Slay the Spire, which is now a big part of Slay the Spire 2.

Mega Crit announced a Slay the Spire 1 original soundtrack vinyl release as well, and the release of new Slay the Spire 2 plushies. Fangamer will also be releasing a range of Slay the Spire 2 merch soon, too.
