Planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot cancelled, says Sarah Michelle Gellar | Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy The Vampire Slayer will not return, its star Sarah Michelle Gellar has announced, saying a reboot of the 90s supernatural fantasy series had been cancelled.

Hulu, the Disney-owned streaming platform, has decided not to pick up the planned sequel, according to the actor.

It was reported last year that the 90s series would return as Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, with Gellar returning as Buffy Summers.

The series was set to be directed by Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning director of movies including Nomadland, Eternals and, most recently, Hamnet.

On social media this weekend, however, Gellar, 48, confirmed that the new show would no longer go ahead, claiming that Hulu decided “not to move forward” with the series.

“I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” she said in a video posted on Instagram. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale.

“I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish, yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”

Signing off with one of the most popular lines from the series, Gellar added: “I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me.”

Hulu was contacted for comment.

The teen drama initially ran for seven seasons, from 1997 until 2003, and followed Buffy as she navigated through high school while also hunting and fighting vampires, demons and other creatures.

The series also starred How I Met Your Mother’s Alyson Hannigan, Charmed actor Charisma Carpenter and the late Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg.
