Alicia Silverstone reached for one of Oscars weekend’s most reliable shoe formulas on Friday night, pairing black minimalist mule sandals with a dark Max Mara look for the Women in Film Oscars Nominees Celebration in Los Angeles.

Silverstone wore glossy black mule sandals with a rounded open toe and a slim sole that stayed mostly hidden beneath the foot. Two narrow straps crossed the forefoot in a diagonal, slightly offset arrangement, while two more sat higher over the instep in clean parallel lines. The open heel kept the shape spare, and what was visible suggested a narrow black heel in the same stripped-back register.

The “Clueless” star’s strappy shoe choice placed her in a familiar Oscars weekend lane. The strappy evening sandal has been part of the Oscars uniform for decades, whether in single-strap or multi-strap form. Stuart Weitzman, Christian Louboutin, Giuseppe Zanotti and Jimmy Choo helped make that light, exposed shape a red carpet constant. Silverstone’s pair pushed the same idea into heeled mule territory, another celebrity shoe trend that has been picking up steam since last fall.

She paired them with a deep espresso Max Mara look that appeared to be a two-piece set. A high-neck top fell in soft draped volume through the sleeves and bodice, stopping just above a wide waistband where a slim strip of skin showed through. A matching skirt fell below the knee in fluid folds and opened at the front with a slit, keeping her strappy sandals on display.
Silverstone attended the event in support of Women in Film and the women being honored during awards weekend. In a room that also included crystal-capped pumps and metallic texture, her sandals took the quieter route: a black mule, four slim straps and one of Hollywood’s most reliable red carpet formulas.
