What? you say. Another
question–why is that the way
you always begin? Time
does not answer, nor memory,
that vague reservoir of what
may or may not have actually
occurred. When? you say,
but I have no inner calendar
to sort things out—it was
long ago, or maybe yesterday,
or it could be it began
and ended as a dream, a wish,
a few random movements
uncoiling, spilling from my hand.

When I saw the Kick-About challenge for finger puppets, the first thing I thought of was the Mexican “La Mano Poderosa” with the saints on the fingers and often a landscape with people and animals in the background. Why not put the landscape in the palm of the hand, and birds on the fingers? The owls, at the top, demanded both a moon and a portal, and when I was looking for some small doors to use on another hand, this one jumped out.

I originally wanted to do buildings on the fingers, but I couldn’t find tiny buildings where the doors were easily seen. So I opted for just the doors. I also tried a number of different vehicles, but this one worked best with the map.

I explored other aspects of nature as well.

And of course how could I forget the cosmos?

The poem is one I wrote for something and never used, but when I ran across it the other day I thought it complemented the artwork well.
And here’s some bonus photos I took yesterday in Central Park. The Great Lawn was a gathering of snow creatures.

And instead of the obvious (The Lovin Spoonful), this song felt right for this time and place in our world.
And don’t forget to visit all the doors at Thursday Doors, hosted by Dan Antion.
