First recall petition against Opposition NDP politician withdrawn: Elections Alberta

EDMONTON — Elections Alberta says a recall petition against a member of Alberta’s Opposition NDP has been withdrawn.

The petition against education critic Amanda Chapman came late last year after more than a dozen similar campaigns were launched against members of the governing United Conservative caucus.

Elections Alberta says the petition against Chapman was withdrawn last week just ahead of its three-month deadline for collecting signatures.

The person behind the petition had previously said it was launched over Chapman’s support for public sector unions such as the Alberta Teachers’ Association, which went on strike last fall.

Chapman says the petition being withdrawn is a clear sign her constituents approve of her standing in solidarity with teachers.

Two other members of the Opposition NDP are also facing recall petitions.

Of the two dozen petitions launched against Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservatives since the strike, 20 have failed or have been withdrawn.

Elections Alberta announced this week that Peter Guthrie, a former cabinet minister for Smith who now leads the fledgling Progressive Tory party, is also facing a recall campaign.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published March 13, 2026.
