Gabriella Karefa-Johnson Joins Depop as Its New Trends Spokesperson

Depop announced Gabriella Karefa-Johnson as its official trends spokesperson.

With her deep ties and widespread leadership across the fashion industry, Karefa-Johnson will be joining the peer-to-peer secondhand fashion marketplace and lending her expertise.

“We are thrilled to welcome Gabriella Karefa‑Johnson as Depop’s 2026 trends spokesperson,” said Steve Dool, senior director of brand and creative at Depop. “Her visionary voice and deep understanding of culture, fashion and community perfectly reflect the core of Depop. Gabriella’s perspective will help inspire our community to explore fresh trends in a way that feels authentic, empowering and fun.”

As part of her new role, Depop said she will work with their team on predicting and identifying emerging trends and how circular fashion plays a leading role in shaping the latest fashion craze. This includes pulling from both qualitative and quantitative Depop data and major cultural moments, before it becomes prevalent to the masses.

Moreover, Karefa-Johnson will continue to speak on the notable industry trends identified on behalf of the company, keep a close eye on what its more than 43.5 million users are searching for and the social media buzz redefining circular fashion and its role within the overall industry.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Depop as trends spokesperson because it represents one of the most authentic reflections of how people are engaging with fashion today,” Karefa-Johnson exclusively told WWD in a statement. “My work has always centered on understanding style as culture, as storytelling and as a reflection of individuality. It’s also always focused on bringing fashion to more people and identifying ways in which everyone can feel welcome. I am looking forward to digging into the aesthetics, subcultures and personal style movements that emerge across Depop and celebrating the people behind them.”

Karefa-Johnson is a globally recognized New York-based fashion trailblazer, celebrity and editorial stylist and creator of the popular Substack “Brain Matter.” She replaces trend forecaster and cultural strategist Agus Panzoni, who departed from the role last year.

Past roles for Karefa-Johnson include a stint at Garage as the fashion director in 2017. She’s most known for being the first Black woman to style covers at Vogue from 2021 onward; she’s also worked with the likes of Serena Williams, Margot Robbie, Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid and was a global contributing editor-at-large at the magazine until her 2023 departure. Other styling cover credits include “Harper’s Bazaar,” “Perfect,” “Re-Edition” and “The Wall Street Journal Magazine.”

Across the industry, she has styled campaigns for Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Victoria’s Secret, Rhode, Coach and on the runway worked with Etro, Altuzarra, Moschino, Torishéju and Nanushka. Recently, Karefa-Johnson styled New York’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, and his wife, Rama Duwaji, for the couple’s inauguration looks this past January.

Depop was most recently acquired by eBay in February for $1.2 billion in a cash deal.
