What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.
Alberta agriculture minister Richard Sigurdson, Protein Industries Canada CEO Tyler Groeneveld, Indian Head mayor Steven Cole and a panel of academic experts are among the witnesses set to share their perspectives on the pending closure of federal research centres across Canada, as well as the role of science in Canadian agriculture, with AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD members. (11 a.m.)
Over at NATURAL RESOURCES, MPs continue their self-initiated exploration of Canada’s energy exports during back-to-back presentations from the Canadian Association of Energy Contractors, Canada’s Building Trades Unions and Svante Technologies ahead of a one-hour session with representatives of the Métis National Council. (11 a.m.)
Meanwhile, INDIGENOUS AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS members are going through the fine print of the government’s bid to establish a Commissioner for Modern Treaty Implementation with First Nations and Indigenous leaders. (11 a.m.)
Also this morning: STATUS OF WOMEN members are set to begin clause-by-clause review of Conservative MP Frank Caputo’s backbench push to impose more stringent restrictions on people charged with offences related to intimate partner violence. (11 a.m.)
Later this afternoon, FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT members will get an update on the situation in Venezuela from Stuart Savage, who serves as Canada’s permanent representative to the Organization of American States. (3:30 p.m.)
GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND ESTIMATES members have blocked off at least two meetings to examine the “comprehensive expenditure review” currently underway, including — although not limited to — “budget cuts affecting public service managers,” with officials from the Union of Veterans’ Affairs Employees expected to testify today, along with senior Treasury Board officials. (3:30 p.m.)
HEALTH members host a panel discussion with representatives of the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association, Canadian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Exporters Alliance, Innovative Medicine Canada and Apotex, as well as Université de Montréal biochemistry professor Michel Bouvier, as they examine “Canada’s pharmaceutical sovereignty.” (3:30 p.m.)
Rounding out the afternoon circuit, PUBLIC SAFETY AND NATIONAL SECURITY members circle back to their ongoing investigation into the removal of “foreign nationals with a criminal record” during a session with International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy director Peter German. (3:30 p.m.)
On the Senate side, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne will field questions on his 641-page plan to roll out measures included in his inaugural budget last fall during a one-hour appearance at NATIONAL FINANCE. (9 a.m.)
Finally, as flagged by iPolitics earlier this month, the SPECIAL JOINT COMMITTEE ON THE EXERCISE OF POWERS UNDER THE BUILDING CANADA ACT, which, as Aya Dufour explains, “oversees the process of granting regulatory exemptions to projects deemed to be in the national interest,” will gather for the first time to select its joint chairs.
Also set to hold its inaugural session: The SPECIAL JOINT COMMITTEE ON MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IN DYING. (6:30 p.m.)
