The Super Mario Galaxy Movie adds surprise Nintendo villain, Wart

Nintendo has a new Nintendo Direct showcase coming on Monday, March 9 — aka Mario Day Eve — that will reveal the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. But Nintendo had a more important revelation on Friday, when the game maker revealed the full poster for its next Super Mario animated movie, and confirmation of a surprise, all-but-forgotten (by Nintendo, anyway) villain.

That’s right: Wart is going to be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Wart is the main antagonist of Super Mario Bros. 2, a massive toad that belches deadly bubbles and is deathly allergic to fruits and vegetables. Originally known as Mamu in the Famicom game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, upon which Super Mario Bros. 2 was based, Wart’s subsequent appearances in Nintendo games have been few and far between. He has mostly appeared in cameo form in games like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, remixes of Super Mario Bros. 2, and as a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Wart has also appeared in various Super Mario Bros. comics and manga over the years.

For fans of a certain age, Wart has a reputation as an under-used foil for the Mario Bros. His role as the big final boss of Super Mario Bros. 2 set an expectation that he’d return at some point, but Nintendo has consistently relied on Bowser to be the ultimate villain of the franchise.

With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Wart will finally get his due. And while his inclusion is something of a surprise, it’s consistent with the sprawling ensemble cast we’ve seen so far, which will include appearances from other Super Mario Bros. 2 baddies like Birdo, Mouser, and Clawgrip.

What remains to be seen is whether another rumored antagonist, Wario, will also appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, or whether there was some sort of Wart/Wario mixup at some point.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, reprising their roles from the first film. New to the cast are Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser, Jr. Hopefully we learn soon who’s behind Wart.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in movie theaters on April 1.
