Joly joins Ont. Premier Doug Ford in Windsor to mark ‘grand opening’ of new EV battery plant

What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.

After an event-packed day in Canberra that, in addition to an address to the Australian parliament, included a back-and-forth with reporters during which, as Canadian Press reports, he seemingly added yet another level of nuance to his position on the “escalating conflict in the Middle East” by refusing to “categorically rule out (Canada’s) participation,” Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to head to Tokyo later today to begin the final round of his tri-continental tour.

Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is set for another round of meetings with “German officials and business leaders” in Berlin.

Back in Canada, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly heads to Windsor, Ont., for the “grand opening of NextStar Energy’s new lithium-ion electric vehicle battery facility,” with Ontario Premier Doug Ford and provincial economic development minister Vic Fedeli also expected to be in attendance. (11:45 a.m.)

For her part, Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu joins British Columbia Social Development Minister Sheila Malcolmson and local Liberal MP Will Greaves outside the provincial legislature in Victoria, B.C.  to unveil new support for B.C. workers “affected by tariffs and global market shifts.” (12 p.m. PT)

Elsewhere on the southwestern Ontario circuit:

  • International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and European Union Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič are booked in for an afternoon signing ceremony and media availability (4:30 p.m.), as well as an “evening conversation” hosted by the Empire Club of Canada that, as per the programme, will include a “fireside chat” with District General Capital partner Arlene Dickinson on the “future of Canada – EU cooperation.” (5:30 p.m.)
  • Earlier in the day, Women and Gender Equality Minister Rechie Veldez drops by the downtown headquarters of YWCA to deliver a fresh tranche of federal support for “community-based initiatives that strengthen supports for women and their families experiencing violence.” (9:30 a.m.)

Also out and about:

Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty spends a second day on the hustings in Cape Breton, where she’s slated to join Eskasoni First Nation chief Leroy Denny to make what her office is billing as “an important announcement regarding the First Nation’s reserve lands (and) economic development” ahead of a separate funding reveal by local Liberal MP Jaime Battiste, who, as per the advisory, will share the details of fresh federal support for local celebrations to mark the 300th anniversary of the signing of the 1726 Treaty of Peace and Friendship. (3 p.m. AT)

Secretary of State for Rural Development Buckley Belanger visits Wyke’s Independent Grocer in Whitehorse to “highlight affordability measures” recently rolled out by the government, including the rebranded GST rebate, which is now called the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, “as well as initiatives to tackle food insecurity.” (10:30 YST)
Rounding out the roster, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson and fellow B.C. Liberal MP Zoe Royer mingle with local supporters during an evening reception at a cocktail bar in Coquitlam, B.C., with all proceeds from the $1,775 ticket price earmarked for the Port Moody — Coquitlam Federal Liberal Association. (7 p.m. PT)

ON AND AROUND THE HILL

Canadian Health Coalition chair Jason MacLean hits the West Block press theatre alongside Canadian Medical Association president Margot Burnell, as well as members of Canadian Doctors for Medicare, to “speak out against two-tier ‘dual practice’ Medicare in Alberta,” as proposed in legislation that “allows doctors to bill the government for publicly funded patient care (and) bill patients privately for the same medically necessary and publicly insured services,” which, the advisory contends, “violates the Canada Health Act,” and is “ushering in a U.S. style two-tiered health care system.” (10 a.m.)

Later today, Public Services and Procurement Canada associate deputy minister Alex Benay will hold an on-camera briefing to deliver what the advisory notes will be “a sixth update on the progress made in preparing for the upcoming transition to the Dayforce human resources and pay solution … as well as ongoing efforts to standardize and simplify HR and pay practices across the public service.” (3 p.m.)
