Gather round, lovers of classic RPGs. The enhanced editions of the first two Baldur’s Gate game, plus Icewind Dale and BG expansion Siege of Dragonspear, have gotten their first patch since 2021. Well, I say gotten, patch 2.7 is only out in Steam beta for now – it’ll hit GOG too further down the line.
“We know it’s been a long wait since 2.6 (and for iOS players, since 2.5),” developers Beamdog wrote in their announcement of We’re truly sorry it took this long. With 2026 marking 14 years since BG:EE first launched on PC, we want to thank you for staying with us on this journey.”
At this point in these Infinity Engine games’ lifespans, Beamdog noted that their main focus is just on keeping things running smoothly as hardware evolves and adding in some handy tweaks where possible. In line with that, patch 2.7 delivers proper Steam cloud saving, by making sure saves can be controlled via Steam’s interface, rather than via in-game options menus. Native support for Apple Silicon Macs is another new addition.
Finally, dynamic language support should make it easier from here on out for Beamdog to add new translations to the games without the need for a full patch “on most store fronts”. Instead, the developers anticipate being able to drop in new languages “on an ad hoc basis”. Speaking of, patch 2.7 adds community-made Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, and Ukrainian translations to Baldur’s Gate 2, plus Hungarian and Japanese ones to Icewind Dale.
While you’ll have to opt into the Steam beta to enjoy those additions for now, Beamdog have confirmed that the patch’ll also be coming to the games’ GOG versions on full release. They’ve also issued some advice for folks looking to avoid have their load orders messed up. “For everyone using mods and worrying about mods, just copy/paste the whole of your game folder in the meantime,” they wrote. “This is a beta for now, so you have plenty of time to do that copy. That way, after the live game updates, you’ll still be able to launch 2.6 with all your mods.”
If this patch has you fancying a return to one of these classic RPGs for the the first time in a while or thinking about trying them for the first time, here are some words you may fancy reading.
