Critical minerals, VIA Rail and immigration in the spotlight


What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

Representatives from the Business Council of Canada, Mining Association of Canada, Vale Base Metals and the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines share their respective perspectives on the “nexus between national defence, national security and Canada’s critical minerals sector” at NATIONAL DEFENCE. (11 a.m.)

Meanwhile, TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITIES members will get the chance to question Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon about “improving VIA Rail’s safety and customer service,” as well as ongoing efforts aimed at “supporting, diversifying and modernizing” Canada’s ports, with senior officials from the Hamilton-Oshawa, Nanaimo and Quebec port authorities also on the witness list. (11 a.m.)

Over at CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION, MPs will review the current immigration system with expert testimony from the Caregivers’ Action Samaritan Movement, Immitracker Inc. and the Sudanese Canadian Community Association, as well as the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada and lawyer James Yousif. (11 a.m.)

  • VETERANS AFFAIRS members get an update on the rehabilitation services contract with PCVRS from Veterans Emergency Transition Services executive director Tim Laidler, Edgewood Health Network executive director Shawn Carter and Institut Alpha psychologist Marc-André Bernard. (11 a.m.)
  • FISHERIES AND OCEANS members continue their self-initiated investigation into marine and coastal protections during back-to-back panel discussions with representatives of the Bay of Fundy Inshore Fishermen’s Association, Coast Tsimshian Fish Plant, ArcticNet  and Atlas Ocean Tours. (11 a.m.)

Later this afternoon, SCIENCE AND RESEARCH members will take a closer look at the “governance and accountability of federal science policy and institutions” with Center for Scientific Integrity executive director Ivan Oransky, Acfas – Association francophone pour le savoir president Martin Maltais and academics and researchers from the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, Université de Montréal and Toronto Metropolitan University. (3:30 p.m.)

Members of the SUBCOMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS hear expert testimony on “internally and externally displaced people across the world” from representatives of Climate Refugees, Conflict and Resilience Research Institute Canada, International Organization for Migration and the Observatory on International Migration, Refugees, Stateless Persons and Asylum. (3:30 p.m.)

Liberal MP Terry Beech presents his backbench proposal to ensure employment insurance and parental benefits continue following the death of a child. (3:30 p.m.)
