Flying Basic Economy? You’ll No Longer Earn Miles On This US Airline


United Airlines is deciding that now is the time for it to tighten the screws on its Basic Economy product and on the way that most people earn their way to a free flight. Starting on April 2, 2026, United MileagePlus members who buy Basic Economy tickets will generally stop earning award miles unless they hold a qualifying United Airlines co-branded card or have Premier elite status.

The move is part of a broader MileagePlus overhaul that shifts more value toward cardholders and higher-value customers, all while making the cheapest fares even more bare-bones in nature. For anyone who treats basic economy as a low-cost, good-enough option, the new rule changes the math immediately for travelers. Frequent flyers certainly are not thrilled.

Basic Economy May Not Be The Best Deal Anymore

United Airlines’ changes apply to tickets purchased on or after April 2, 2026. The headline here is that Basic Economy stops earning MileagePlus award miles for general members who do not have a United Airlines co-branded credit card or Premier status. Beyond the basic economy cabin, United is cutting base mileage accrual rates for non-cardholders as well. The standard member rate is dropping from five miles per dollar to just three.

At the same time, the airline is improving earning rates and other perks for cardholders. United Airlines has indicated that cardholders can earn up to twice as many miles per dollar on flights as non-cardholders, according to the Chicago Tribune. This includes the layering of award discounts of at least 10% for eligible cardholders alongside broader access to lower-priced awards. More differentiation is being made by status and by what someone has in their wallet, with the gap widening at higher tiers.

What Is Motivating United To Do This?

This is a competitive strategy disguised as loyalty. Basic Economy exists to match ultra-low fares without giving away the good stuff, and United Airlines now has two major reasons to tighten it up quicker. All three major carriers are converging on this. Delta Air Lines has long limited rewards on its cheapest tickets (a key piece of its premium-forward strategy). American Airlines has also recently moved in the same direction.

United Airlines may be appearing too generous at the bottom end if it keeps handing out miles on bargain fares, something investors and analysts really do not support. United Airlines is also fighting a market share war in the wallet market in the most profitable battleground, which is co-branded credit cards. Carriers sell miles to banks as a huge profit engine, so shifting earnings, discounts, and saver inventory toward cardholders makes the card feel more mandatory.

That is pretty much the goal of all this, to make having a United Airlines cobranded card feel more mandatory than an option. The result is sharper segmentation, with customers willing to pay up, hold status, or carry the card unless they really want an absolutely bare-bones fare. It also further lowers the cost of issuing miles, trims mileage liabilities, and nudges travelers to often buy up to the price of standard economy seats.

However, the airline’s Elite Status members will still be eligible for First Class upgrades with Basic Economy tickets.

Passengers Need To Be Aware Of These Changes

For passengers, the practical takeaway here is relatively simple. A Basic Economy ticket on United Airlines is now a seat-only purchase in loyalty terms unless one is already in the club. If you do not have Premier status or an eligible United card, you will earn zero award miles on such a fare. This really incentivizes occasional flyers away from accumulating rewards in this manner.

Basic Economy becomes a dead end for building a usable balance. Travelers who do hold status or a card can still learn on Basic Economy, but they will do so at considerably reduced rates, reinforcing the idea that the cheapest ticket is meant for one-off trips, not necessarily progression.

United Airlines says that Basic Economy flyers will still earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP), but that such itineraries will not account for Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF), so status-chasing still skews toward higher fares. Passengers can thus expect much more upselling pressure at checkout.
