Lufthansa Now Selling Majority Of Boeing 787-9 Allegris Seats Amid Certification Struggles

German carrier Lufthansa is now selling almost all Allegris seats onboard its new Boeing 787-9 fleet, marking a major turning point in a rollout that has been hampered by regulatory red tape. The airline is now selling 25 of the 28 Allegris seats fitted to its 787 Dreamliners, with bookings open for travel starting April 15, 2026.

Since it first entered service in October, Lufthansa has been flying the Allegris cabin on its flagship 787 Dreamliners almost entirely empty as certification hurdles hold up its new seats. With the majority of seats in the cabin approaching full certification, the airline’s lucrative premium cabin will come online just in time for the busy summer travel season.

As announced by the airline on Monday, bookings are now open for Allegris seats on select routes from April 15. The carrier said that “further important milestones in the certification process” were realized in recent weeks, paving the way for its flagship business class cabin to make its (almost) full debut on the 787-9 in two months. The airline is currently flying its new 787-9 fleet with just four Allegris suites for sale, with the cabin’s remaining 24 seats blocked for sale.

With 25 of the 28 available seats now open, only three seats will remain blocked as the carrier continues to make progress with certification requirements. These three blocked seats — 2A and 2K (window) and 2E (throne) — are in the second row of the compartment behind the suites. At this stage, it isn’t clear if the carrier expects certification on these remaining seats by April. Jens Ritter, Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Airlines, commented,

“We are delighted to be able to offer significantly more passengers this top-of-the-range product for bookings from Frankfurt starting today. Allegris is an experience in all classes; the approval of the majority of seats in Business Class on the Boeing 787-9 is an important milestone for Lufthansa – and above all, great news for our customers!”

When making bookings, Allegris passengers will have a much wider choice of seat options compared to flights on the 787-9 today, which are limited to just four suites. The full Allegris product offers up to seven seat options, along with various features like seat heating and cooling.

Customers can now select the following special Allegris seat options (for an additional charge) while making reservations: the Business Class Suite, the Extra Space Seat with extra legroom, the Privacy Seat by the window, and the Extra Long Bed, which features an extended 2.20-meter lying surface. Bookings for Classic Seats will remain free of charge and include all the travel perks enjoyed by other seat options.

Allegris made its debut on the Dreamliner in October, but had been flying for much longer on Lufthansa’s Airbus A350s. Allegris made its entry into service in May 2024, with LH’s A350s also featuring its Allegris First Class cabin.

The airline has been flying its Allegris-equipped 787-9s since October 2025, but the cabin’s highly anticipated “full” rollout won’t be until this spring. Out of its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) hub, Lufthansa will fly the new airframes to multiple long-haul destinations.

This will initially include Austin, Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, Cape Town, Shanghai, Hyderabad, and Hong Kong, before New York JFK and Los Angeles join in June, along with Delhi in July.

So far, the German carrier has taken delivery of eight of its new 787-9 fleet, despite not obtaining full certification for all Allegris seats. It has another 21 Dreamliners on order, which will take the airline to a total of 29 787-9s in its fleet once all deliveries are fulfilled. All deliveries are expected to be completed fairly rapidly, with Lufthansa expecting all aircraft to arrive by the end of 2027.
