NDP calls for Canada to support Cuba in the face of Trump’s aggression « Canada’s NDP

NDP leader Don Davies issued the following statement:

“Canada must provide immediate support to Cuba in the face of escalating aggression from the Trump administration. Recent U.S. actions are provoking a severe humanitarian crisis and disrupting travel across the region, leaving Canadians stranded as airlines suspend flights.
The United States’ long‑standing and illegal blockade has now intensified into an effort to choke off Cuba’s fuel supply entirely. By threatening tariffs on any third country that transports fuel to the island, the Trump administration is expanding U.S. economic coercion in dangerous new ways.
This follows a U.S. attack on Venezuela that was met with a muted response from the international community. Emboldened by the lack of pushback, President Trump now claims sweeping authority over the entire Western Hemisphere. This so‑called ‘Donroe Doctrine’ threatens the sovereignty of all nations throughout the Americas, including Canada.
At Davos, Prime Minister Carney urged the global community to stand up to superpower intimidation and called on middle powers to act together against it. Yet he has remained silent in the face of Trump’s aggression towards Cuba. It’s time for his actions to match his rhetoric.
Successive Canadian governments have adopted an independent foreign policy approach to Cuba. We have maintained uninterrupted diplomatic relations with Cuba since 1945 and consistently supported international efforts to end the illegal U.S. blockade. Nearly one million Canadians visit Cuba every year, and our countries have long-standing and significant commercial and cultural ties.
Canada must stand with the Cuban people and resist the Trump administration’s aggression clearly and directly. This is a defining test of principle, and we must not fail it.”
