Mang0 reveals he’s 3 weeks sober after alcoholism got him banned from Smash events

Legendary Super Smash Bros player Joseph ‘Mang0’ Marquez has shared a major update after being booted from C9 for drunken behavior at Ludwig’s Beerio Kart event.

On June 21, Mang0 was dropped from C9 and later briefly banned on Twitch after he was filmed harassing multiple streamers, including ExtraEmily at Ludwig’s Switch 2 Mario Kart World Cup event.

The event, Beerio Kart, required competitors to finish their drinks before the end of a race or be disqualified.

Although Ludwig also came under fire with viewers accusing him of “enabling” Mang0 by going as far as celebrating the Smash player’s drunkenness with a breathalyzer, the Smash pro has taken full responsibility.

A month after the incident, Mang0 went live on Twitch to reveal how he’s been dealing with overcoming his addiction and confirmed that he has been banned from Smash events for a whole year.

Mang0 reveals steps to overcome alcoholism

On July 21, Mang0 announced that he had been completely banned from Melee tournaments, but urged his viewers not to harass Smash TOs over the ban.

“I think it’s fine,” he said. “I’m ok with it. If you’re a Mang0 fan I’d appreciate it if no one harassed the TOs.”

The Smash pro, who is known as one of the ‘Five Gods’ of Melee, stated that since the incident, he has only been drunk one time, and it was four of five days after the controversy.

“I sat right in this chair, drank a whole bottle of Gin and I just sat here and cried until 4AM,” the Falco main revealed.

Unfortunately, with Mang0 kicked from his org and having lost 80% of his income, he felt that attending rehab would be too expensive. Furthermore, he attended a couple of AA meetings and felt it “wasn’t for him.”

That said, he has received help from professionals who reached out and offered assistance for free and plans on getting therapy once he gets his insurance back.

Marquez also revealed that he’s been doing research and watching videos on his own to help.

“I’m proud to say, and I know it’s not a lot, but I am three weeks sober today. Not a sip of alcohol and I don’t really have an urge to drink,” he said.

“I see alcohol as a friend and I feel like it just f**ked me. I can’t even look at alcohol… too many times it’s f**ked me.”

With Mang0’s ban only lasting one year and the Melee star trying to get his life under control, it may only be a matter of time until he returns to professional Smash and is once again battling it out with Hungrybox.
