The party hasn’t made a decision yet, and may be no closer than ever. Lately, all the momentum has been in the opposite direction, as the determined, energetic — and younger — leftist wing of the party racks up surprise victories. There was Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani winning New York’s mayoralty on the same day Democrats won gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey; Miami electing its first Democratic mayor in almost 30 years, in a city a 90-minute drive from Mar-a-Lago against a candidate endorsed by Trump; and last Saturday’s surprise election of 33-year-old aircraft mechanic Taylor Rehmet to the Texas state senate against a candidate lauded by Trump as a “true MAGA Warrior” in a district Trump won by 17 points.
