Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix wasn’t happy with his head coach, Sean Payton, after Payton publicly discussed Nix’s medical history.

Nix suffered a fractured ankle during Denver’s victory over the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round of the AFC playoffs last weekend, and Payton told media members that Nix was predisposed to the injury, and that it was going to happen eventually one way or another.

“What was found was a condition that was predisposed — they always find a little more when they go in,” Payton replied when asked if there was any concern that Nix has had multiple ankle surgeries in his career. “It wasn’t a matter of if, it was a matter of when. When you look at the play and you’re trying to evaluate it — the doctor, the operating surgeon said that this was going to happen sooner than later.”

In his first public comments since the injury, Nix refuted his coach’s claim that the injury was unavoidable.

“[But] nothing predisposed, nothing that was there originally,” Nix said of the injury. “That might have gotten confused. Just a simple step with my foot up in the air, my body weight came down on it, sort of got twisted up. … It could have been a worse landing, but I think all that force went into the only place it could.”

Nix then questioned his coach for publicly dislocating his surgical history.

“I don’t think he really should share how many surgeries I’ve had in the past, to be honest with you — he doesn’t even really know that,” Nix said. “But it’s going to be good to get back, get back to work. … Nothing really that concerns me, nothing that scares me moving forward.”

Clearly, Nix was annoyed, or bothered, by his coach’s comments, and the fact that they came publicly, otherwise he wouldn’t have addressed them in the manner that he did.

Ultimately, this is probably something that will blow over and be long forgotten by the time that training camp rolls around. However, there’s also a non-zero chance that it could start to sow the seeds of distrust between Nix and Payton and ultimately contribute to the deterioration of their relationship.

Which will it be? Only time will tell. Obviously, Broncos fans are hoping that it turns out to be the former.
