Liberals expected to announce GST credit changes, say sources

Feds expected to introduce a targeted GST credit changes.

With Parliament set to resume on Monday, the federal Liberals are planning to introduce measures aimed at addressing Canadians’ affordability concerns, iPolitics has learned.

And one of those appears to be expansions to the GST credit that would help some 12 million Canadians, according to caucus and government Liberal sources, who asked not to be identified because they aren’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

If legislation is forthcoming, it’s unclear when that would be introduced. As of Sunday morning, there’s nothing on the House notice paper about impending government legislation.

The news comes after Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said at this past week’s cabinet retreat that affordability was the top issue facing voters.

A government source said the Liberals understand that affordability remains a major concern for voters, even as tensions with the U.S. dominate the headlines.

A separate Liberal source said the issue was discussed with stakeholders in recent weeks.
