United Airlines also enforces a minimum of four United-operated segments to qualify, which prevents a pure credit-card-only status qualification run. The upside is that this dual pathway fits more traveler archetypes. Frequent short-haul flyers can stack PQFs while accumulating PQPs, while premium travelers can lean into the spending-only setup. United also ties upgrades more tightly to tiers, especially in Platinum and 1K, where PlusPoints are a key piece of any benefits stack.

The top end of the spectrum thus offers stronger benefits. The downside, however, is the increased cognitive load on loyalty program members who have to track status in two separate currencies. Co-branded credit cards can thus contribute meaningfully to PQPs, but caps and rules mean that flying pretty much has to be a central element of status qualification for all kinds of passengers.

United Airlines has some more complex requirements, as passengers can blend flights and qualifying points, and simply using credit cards to reach this status is not always the most efficient thing to do. This ultimately does not provide the carrier with any kind of improved leverage.

For most flyers looking for the easiest path, Delta Air Lines will usually be the easier option. However, if you are a high-volume traveler who prefers United Airlines, Premier status could be the path of least resistance for you.
