What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
After clocking in just over a week on the international diplomatic circuit, Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to spend the next two days ensconced in a pre-sitting huddle with his front bench team at what his office is billing as a “cabinet planning forum” slated to get underway in Quebec City later this afternoon. (3 p.m.)
As per the advisory, the meeting “will focus on the government’s core mission to build a stronger, more sustainable, and more independent Canadian economy that benefits everyone,” and will “determine priorities for delivering change in the year ahead,” including “the next steps in the government’s plan to bring down everyday costs and make life more affordable for Canadians.”
The assembled ministers will also “hear from leading experts across government, finance, community services, advanced technology, and global affairs,” who “will provide insights into the current global landscape and help identify emerging opportunities for Canadian leadership,” according to the notice.
Before kicking off the opening round of closed-door discussions, Carney will “deliver remarks on the choices on which Canada was built and the shared values that make us Canada strong.” (1 p.m.)
Also making the rounds in Quebec City ahead of the cabinet confab: Canadian Identity Minister Marc Miller, who will “meet with cultural stakeholders (to) learn more about the realities and needs of the performing arts sector.” (10:45 a.m.)
Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will mingle with supporters at a party fundraiser in downtown Toronto. (5 p.m.)
