Netflix will revamp its mobile UI this year

Netflix is working on a new mobile UI set to roll out later this year that will “better serve the expansion of our business over the decade to come,” co-CEO Greg Peters said in an earnings call on Tuesday. The new mobile UI follows last year’s big TV revamp that put a new banner front and center on the home screen recommending something to watch.

With the TV revamp, former chief product officer Eunice Kim said it was designed to “give us a more flexible canvas, now and in the future,” and Peters says the new mobile UI will similarly serve as a foundation for what’s to come. After it rolls out, “it becomes a platform for us to continue to iterate, test, evolve, and improve our offering.”

Peters shared the details about the new UI when asked a question about why vertical video isn’t a higher priority for Netflix. He highlighted how Netflix is already testing a vertical video feed in its mobile app featuring clips from shows and movies, and he says that “you can imagine” that Netflix might also feature clips from things like video podcasts, which are becoming increasingly important to the company, in the feed.
