A secret Edge of Eternities Commander deck

Edge of Eternities was my favorite Magic: The Gathering set of 2025. I love the science-fiction setting, I love drafting it, I love the cycle of “planet” lands, and I really love the World Shaper precon. Even so, when Wizards of the Coast sent me a Final Fantasy scene box, the last thing I expected was to build a new Edge of Eternities deck. But that’s exactly what happened.

Out of the six cards included in the Final Fantasy 8 scene box, four of them are great possible Commanders with wildly different strategies. Rinoa, Angel Wing is all about flying. Squall, Gunblade Duelist lets you build a deck around any specific power and/or toughness level. Seifer, Balamb Rival is all about goading enemy creatures and forcing your opponents to attack each other. However, I was immediately drawn to the fourth option: Edea, Possessed Sorceress.

Edea’s abilities all flow together nicely. On your turn, at the start of combat, you get to steal one creature from another player and attack with it. As an added bonus, if that creature dies, you draw a card. Either way, they get the creature back. No harm done, right? (Edea also has a bit of protection built in with Ward 2, which is perfect for a Commander who won’t be attacking but is still an obvious target for reasons that will soon become obvious.)

Because Edea wants whatever creature you borrow to die, this deck is all about sacrificing those creatures for benefit. This is a strategy called “aristocrat” in Magic. To pull it off, you need lots of ways to sacrifice your creatures (something Edea can’t do on her own). My solution is a bunch of sorceries like Embrace Oblivion, creatures like Vile Mutilator and High-Society Hunter, and enchantments like Vampiric Rites. With a deck full of cards like this, I can pretty much always guarantee I’ll have a way to kill off whatever creature I need to.

But that’s just the beginning. Like any good deck, this one only kicks into high gear once you start stacking up triggers. That’s where Edge of Eternities comes in. One of that set’s best mechanics is Void, which checks at the end of your turn to see if a permanent left the battlefield (like if a creature died). Cards like Elegy Acolyte, Insatiable Skittermaw, Interceptor Mechan, and Lightless Evangel all get extra benefits from whatever sacrifice I make each turn at the altar of Edea. This is the core of the deck, and it’s all Edge of Eternities.

Finally, I’ve put in a few other cards to squeeze even more value out of the deck. Cards like Involuntary Employment and The Shattered States Era let me steal more than one creature per turn, while Irenicus’s Vile Duplication and Silent Hallcreeper let me create my own copy of that creature before it dies.

This deck is still a work in progress, but I’m sharing my Edea, Posessed Sorceress decklist in case you want to take a look. If you have any suggestions for cards to include, or other directions to take this Commander entirely, let me know in the comments.
