Given Australia’s isolated geographical position, long-range aircraft like the Boeing 787 are ideally suited for carriers flying down under. Australia hosts some of the world’s longest scheduled commercial routes, with ultra-long pairings like London-Perth and Dallas-Melbourne served by the 787.
Australia also has some surprisingly short 787 Dreamliner routes, including one domestic connection measuring under 400 nautical miles. Several airlines fly the aircraft on short and medium-haul routes in the region, serving countries including New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Australia’s Shortest Boeing 787 Dreamliner Routes
As per data from aviation analytics company Cirium for the first quarter of 2026, the shortest 787 Dreamliner route in Australia is a Jetstar-operated service between Sydney (SYD) and Melbourne (MEL) that is just 381 nautical miles (706 km) long. The Australian budget carrier currently operates two weekly round-trips on this pairing, but this will drop to just a weekly service from February. Jetstar uses the shorter Boeing 787-8 variant on this connection, which can seat up to 335 passengers, with 21 in business class and 314 in economy.

The busy air corridor between Western Australia and New Zealand’s Auckland Airport makes up the next shortest 787 services, with both Air New Zealand and Qantas operating Dreamliner flights from Sydney and Brisbane to Auckland. Air New Zealand also uses its 787-9 fleet to fly between Melbourne and Auckland, but Qantas deploys its Boeing 737s on this pairing. Qantas does use the Dreamliner on one of its domestic services, namely Sydney-Perth, which is a lengthy domestic flight at almost five hours long. The busiest pairing to feature on this list is Perth-Singapore, which sees flights with all three Dreamliner variants courtesy of Scoot and Singapore Airlines.
The Onboard 787 Experience With Each Airline
A total of seven airlines feature in the ten shortest 787 Dreamliner routes in Australia, with the list dominated by Air New Zealand and Qantas. Both airlines operate three-class 787-9 Dreamliners, although their cabins differ in their respective configurations. Qantas’ 787 fleet has a more premium-heavy focus, featuring a total capacity of 236 passengers — 42 in business, 28 in premium economy and 166 in economy. Compare this to New Zealand’s national carrier, which is retrofitting its 787s to feature more premium capacity, with 26 in business, 33 in premium economy and 215 in economy, for a total capacity of 274 passengers.
Singapore Airlines flies the larger 787-10 variant and has equipped them with only two cabin classes, with 36 in business and 301 in economy. Meanwhile, SIA’s low-cost subsidiary Scoot operates the 787-8 and 787-9, both of which feature its enhanced “ScootPlus”, which is a premium economy-level product.
Vietnam Airlines and Thai Airways both fly the 787-9 on their respective routes, and both deliver a strong premium offering. Thai Airways offers a two-class configuration of 30 business and 268 economy seats, while Vietnam Airlines’ 787-9s are three-class – 28 in business, 35 in premium economy and 211 in economy. As mentioned, Jetstar flies the 787-8 with a focus on more economy capacity, although an upcoming retrofit will double business capacity to 44 from next year.

Comparison With World’s Shortest 787 Routes
Simple Flying has explored the world’s shortest 787 Dreamliner services, with the shortest route measuring just 14 nautical miles (26 km). This flight — operated by Air France between Brazzaville (BZV) and Kinshasa (FIH) — is a part of a triangular route with AF’s Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) hub.
While there are several scheduled 787 flights under 100 nautical miles (185 km), the majority are short segments on triangle routes. The shortest standalone 787 flight is a Qatar Airways service between Doha (DOH) and Bahrain (BAH), which is just 80 nautical miles (148 km), closely followed by a Shanghai Airlines flight between Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Ningbo (NGB).
