Carney heads to Beijing as ministers promote fresh federal support for Waterloo, Ont. manufacturers, N.S. curling club

What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.

After a brief stopover in British Columbia yesterday to talk to Coastal First Nations leaders about his government’s major projects plans — and more specifically, as Aya Dufour reports, the still-theoretical prospect of a bitumen pipeline through Northern B.C. — Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to arrive in Beijing later this morning, with his plane on track to touch down at 8:45 p.m. local time, according to his itinerary.

As Canadian Press reports, he’s expected to kick off his three-day visit by meeting with “the second and third most powerful leaders in China’s communist system: Premier Li Qiang — nominally caretaker of China’s economy and in charge of its cabinet — and Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress” ahead of a planned tête-à-tête with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, the following day.

Back in Canada, Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon is booked in for a third day on the hustings in southwestern Ontario — this time, in Waterloo, Ont., where he’ll team up with local Liberal MP Bardish Chagger to unveil “economic support (for) two Ontario-based manufacturers.” (9 a.m.)

Also on the radar: Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab drops by the Mayflower Curling Club in Timberlea, N.S. to share the details of a fresh tranche of federal infrastructure funding. (10 a.m. AT)
