So, yes, there are no business cases for pipelines in Canada, only political ones. After the Americans deposed Venezuela’s murderous dictator Nicolás Maduro last weekend, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith argued that it had become even more necessary to approve and build pipelines in order to compete with Venezuelan oil. Yes, it could take about a decade for the Latin American country’s oil industry to rebuild once U.S. sanctions are lifted and investment resumes, assuming everything goes perfectly, which it likely won’t. But it could take at least that long to bring a new pipeline to the West Coast online.
