Minister Joly concludes participation at Munich Security Conference and announces new funding for Ukraine

February 16, 2025 – Munich, Germany – Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, concluded her participation at the 2025 Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany.

At the Conference, Minister Joly advanced key foreign policy priorities, including supporting Ukraine in the face of continued Russian aggression; highlighting Canada’s Arctic Foreign Policy; advancing defence and security efforts in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific regions and Canada’s commitment to economic security.

On the margins of the Conference, Minister Joly met with many of her counterparts to strengthen key relationships, including with Andrii Sybiha, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Ministers Joly and Sybiha discussed the security situation in Ukraine and how to deter ongoing and future Russian aggression. Minister Joly reiterated Canada’s commitment, including through its role as the G7 President in 2025, to supporting Ukraine’s efforts to seek a just and lasting peace.

To reaffirm Canada’s ongoing support for Ukraine, as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s illegal, full-scale invasion, Minister Joly announced that Canada will provide $15 million in funding to the Innovative Mine Action for Community Recovery in Ukraine project, under the Ukraine Community Recovery Fund, to help enhance Ukraine’s national mine action capacity, reduce the threat of explosive ordinance and promote economic recovery. She also announced an additional support of $2.2 million in funding for the Cybersecurity Assistance Project to provide essential cybersecurity support services, equipment and training that are urgently needed by Ukraine to combat malicious cyber activities.

Canada will continue to stand with the Ukrainian people, to strongly condemn the Kremlin’s brutal actions and to use every tool at its disposal to hold Russia accountable.
