The Guardian’s Hope appeal has so far raised more than £850,000 thanks to generous readers’ continuing support for our five inspirational charity partners, whose work aims to tackle division, racism and hatred.

The 2025 Guardian appeal is raising funds for five charities: Citizens UK, the Linking Network, Locality, Hope Unlimited Charitable Trust and Who is Your Neighbour?.

The Hope appeal, entering its final few days, is aiming to raise £1m for grassroots voluntary organisations campaigning against extremism, violence and harassment, anti-migrant rhetoric, and the re-emergence of “1970s-style racism”.

The appeal has struck a chord with thousands of readers. One emailed us to say: “I am so worried about the division being sown between people in the UK. Bringing people together is a powerful mitigation to this … I’m so glad the Guardian chose these charities for its appeal.”

One donor wrote: “I am appalled hearing the hateful and divisive rhetoric from many politicians and people with power. I want to help people who are trying to help those in need, wherever they are from, whatever the colour of their skin.”

Another said: “I am glad to contribute what I can to the cause of neighbourliness and better understanding between people in this country. Wherever we come from, we are brothers and sisters, we are the human family.”

All five charities deliver practical projects designed to foster empathy and tolerance, build trust and promote positive change on the issues that matter for local communities, from affordable housing to youth clubs, arts projects to food banks.

A series of articles and films highlighting the charities’ work includes Josh Halliday’s dramatic account of how Citizens UK, local faith groups and individuals gathered to face down a threatened racist attack on a Liverpool refugee support centre in 2024.

Taj Ali’s Guardian film featured the work of Locality member Back on the Map, a community organisation revitalising a Sunderland neighbourhood after the far-right riots in 2024. Taj also worked with Who Is Your Neighbour? to produce a short film on the art of difficult conversations around race and immigration.
