Federal law enforcement involved in ‘ICE-related shooting’ in Minneapolis

Federal law enforcement was involved in a shooting Wednesday in Minneapolis, a city spokesperson said.

The shooting happened near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, the spokesperson said in a brief statement, and asked people to avoid the area.

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said the incident was allegedly “vehicle ramming related.”

According to McLaughlin, federal law enforcement said a woman rammed her car into them, but noted that the department is still gathering information.

Video footage from NBC affiliate KARE 11 of Minneapolis showed a burgundy SUV with a bullet hole in the windshield. The vehicle had crashed into a light pole. It’s not clear who the SUV belongs to.

After the shooting, residents and locals gathered in the street, chanting and throwing snowballs in the direction of federal agents, KARE reported. Law enforcement deployed pepper spray and tear gas.

Governor Tim Walz said in a post on X that his public safety team “is working to gather information on an ICE related shooting this morning.”

“We will share information as we learn more. In the meantime, I ask folks to remain calm,” he said.

Mayor Jacob Frey demanded that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers “leave the city immediately” and said “the presence of federal law enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city.”

“We stand rock solid with our immigrant and refugee communities,” he said in a post on X.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
