As the New Year swept in, I, like many of us, used the days before to reset. Having edited my London capsule wardrobe down to 11 elevated pieces weeks prior, I truly believed I was in a good place. That was until I took a look at the long wool coats in my rotation and realised it was a category I had feverishly overlooked.

Simple in its construction yet perennially chic, the long wool coat as a category is fairly broad. Whether your style of choice is an irreverently oversized overcoat like those popularised by The Frankie Shop, or an elevated scarfed iteration by Toteme, there are many out there, all able to work with almost anything in your wardrobe.

And, whilst winter is often synonymous with the fun the festivities bring, its icy chill waits for no one. Sure, a cosy duvet-esque puffer might be warmer for snow days; if the goal is to look smart whilst feeling like you’re receiving a warm hug, a long wool coat is a cold-weather no-brainer.

With designers such as Max Mara, Tove and Rohé consistently championing the long wool coat year after year, it feels well placed amongst the tapered trousers and slip-on loafers slowly filtering into our 2026 capsule wardrobes.
