United Flight Attendant Arrested For Tapping Crew On The Shoulder

Earlier this year, a United Airlines flight attendant was arrested at Tampa International Airport (TPA) in the US federal state of Florida after a reported altercation with a member of staff from Cayman Airways. The incident took place back in March of 2025, but has recently come to the fore after bodycam footage of the flight attendant’s arrest surfaced on the internet over the weekend.

The situation allegedly arose after the United Airlines flight attendant tapped his Cayman Airways counterpart on the shoulder during an employee shuttle bus ride due to the latter making a loud phone call. While a seemingly innocuous gesture, this act resulted in the member of cabin crew being charged with battery. Let’s take a closer look at what exactly is known about the case and how it unfolded.

A Dispute Over Phone Usage Prompted The Incident

According to View From The Wing, the incident occurred on March 8 of this year, with the series of unfortunate events beginning on a crew shuttle bus. This vehicle was tasked with taking various employees from the car park to the terminal building at Tampa International Airport. Before this journey, a Cayman Airways employee is said to have been engaged in a phone call that was louder than ideal.

This took place at the bus stop, with the Cayman colleague reporting that her United counterpart told her that her voice was annoying and to “close [her] mouth.” She challenged the United crew member’s intentions and even accused him of racism, with the situation continuing to escalate as they boarded the bus. At this point, he tapped her on the shoulder to get her to turn round and show him her ID card.

Simple Flying has reached out to United Airlines for further information regarding this matter. We will update our coverage upon receiving a statement from the carrier.

According to Cayman Marl Road, his intention with this seemingly innocuous gesture was to get her details in order to report the incident to Cayman Airways. However, her recollection alleges that he reached for and attempted to manipulate her badge as part of this interaction, with One Mile At A Time noting that, when she asked him not to touch her, he ceased doing so. However, that wasn’t the end.

Indeed, with his attempts to identify the Cayman staff member proving unsuccessful, the United Airlines flight attendant followed her into the terminal to try to obtain her details and file a complaint. This is a detail that he acknowledged as being correct, and he also admitted to having tapped her shoulder in order to try and get her attention in the early salvos of the exchange following the phone call.

It was after the two had entered the terminal that local police officers decided to step in and arrest the United Airlines flight attendant, with the simple gesture of a tap on the shoulder constituting battery under Florida law. The incident has prompted debate over the specifics of this law, as well as the fine lines of conflict when it comes to challenging loud public phone use without crossing physical boundaries.

The United Flight Attendant Could Not Work His Scheduled Flight As Planned

In any case, the arrest and charging of the United Airlines flight attendant meant that he was unable to work his scheduled flight as planned. This, Cayman Marl Road notes, highlighted the need for police discretion in such minor altercations, given the operational disruption and knock-on effects that United Airlines may have had to deal with as a result of needing to find a standby crew member.

United Airlines and Cayman Airways have rather different presences at Tampa International Airport. Indeed, present scheduling data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that, in December 2025, United Airlines has penciled in a grand total of 1,659 flights on routes to and from Tampa. Contrastingly, Cayman Airways has scheduled just 42 flights to and from Tampa Airport this month.
