Carmen Electra has graced the cover of Playboy countless times. So when the magazine was brainstorming about the best way to introduce its Playboy x Von Dutch hat collection at Lids, the team immediately thought of her. And it didn’t take more than a moment for the actress, model and sex symbol to agree.
“It makes absolute and complete sense, due to the fact that I wore Von Dutch snapbacks and trucker hats in the 2000s and I’ve been on over 150 covers of Playboy worldwide,” she said. “So they came to me with this idea, and I loved it.”
The Playboy x Von Dutch Lids collection will feature five adjustable trucker hats and one fitted model. The collection launches Friday exclusively at the 180-plus Lids stores nationwide.
Although Electra admits that she may be better known for her glamour shots, she says she has a closet full of trucker hats and snapbacks. “I think people don’t really see me that way, but that’s how I am day to day: I’m in my baggy sweats and snapback going to the gym. It’s a look I used to rock in the 2000s, then I stopped wearing it for a while, and then it came back again, and now it’s even bigger than before.”
So she was comfortable slipping on the hats for the collection shoot.
Electra said working with the teams on the shoot felt “really easy and collaborative. They really understood the nostalgia and the personality behind Playboy and Von Dutch and they really leaned into what makes this collection special. Lids has a strong presence across fashion, sports and pop culture, and they also carry both Playboy and Von Dutch, so I think it was the perfect collab to do with Lids as well.”
She said the shoot took place in San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, near her home on a day that wasn’t filled with the famous California sunshine. “It was pouring cats and dogs, so we found random places to shoot,” she said. “We went to the mall, and the grocery store, and a gas station. It was a really quick day of shooting, and it was shot paparazzi-style, just like the 2000s, because that is the inspiration.”
The clothes she wore were also inspired by that era, which she believes will connect with the current crop of young people. “This generation is obsessed with the ‘90s and 2000s, so it’s perfect.”
She added that she enjoys revisiting those years. “Right now, we’re kind of stuck in the ‘90s and 2000s because I feel like the ‘90s was about matching everything, but the 2000s was about mismatching everything. That’s what really came through in the photo shoot we did, because everything was very mismatched: the colors, the clothing, and that’s what made it really fun. And the hats have that vibe about them as well.”
Beyond serving as the face of this collection, Electra said she’s the cover model on the 25th anniversary of Supermodels Unlimited magazine and is also featured on a billboard in Times Square that will remain through January. The magazine also hosted a big party for the anniversary on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles on Thursday night where Electra’s boyfriend, Franco Vescovi, who owns the tattoo shop Hollywood Vatican, was doing free tattoos.
Electra said she has several pieces of body art and two of her favorites are the “love” tattoo Vescovi created for her. “I got to tattoo an ‘L’ on him and it was a perfect ‘L,’” she said. “So I’m really proud. He also tattooed a rose on me because he said he’s the only person who could give me a rose that would last forever. It’s a black rose with a drip of blood on the bottom. The thorns represent the difficult times I’ve gone through in my life, but on top, the flower blossoms and blooms represent the great life I’m living now.”
But her partnership with Playboy x Von Dutch begs the question, will she get a Playboy tattoo? “I’m thinking about getting one,” she said. “It’s definitely a huge part of my history so I think it would be really cool.”
