The first part of Stranger Things season 5 is slated to arrive later this month, and to satiate the palate of all the fans worldwide, Netflix has released the opening scene of the upcoming premiere episode. The clip is a few seconds short of five minutes but is jam-packed with pivotal information for folks who may have stepped away from Hawkins and need a bit of a refresher before wrapping this series up. After all, it’s been over three years since season 4 of Stranger Things premiered.
The clip begins in the Upside Down, on November 12, 1983. It’s a flashback, showcasing Will Byers taking shelter in the woods in Castle Byers, the fort made of sticks from earlier in the series. Hiding in his fort, Will sings“Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Clash. Suddenly, the Demogorgon appears to capture Will, without realizing that he has a rifle at the ready, which he uses to take aim at the monster’s head. The shot allows the 11-year-old Will to make his escape; he outruns the monster, expertly climbs a tree, makes a slow-motion jump onto another while red lightning crashes in the background. Unfortunately, he can’t quite stick the landing and ends up captured anyway.
The Demogorgon drags Will into the lair of Vecna, who then it pumps some substance through its tendrils and into Will’s mouth. Vecna then says “At long last we can begin.” He continues, menacingly, as Will chokes down the substance, “You and I, we are going to do such beautiful things together, William. Such beautiful things.” This confirms that whatever happens in the fifth season has been in the works by Vecna since the show began, and, unfortunately for Will, he seems to be the key.
Season 5 of Stranger Things finds the gang in fall of 1987, close to the anniversary of Will’s season 1 disappearance into the Upside Down. It’s a fitting place to start, allowing the show to come full circle. Now the Upside Down is opening over Hawkins, with the military basically shuttering the town, as seen in the full trailer released ahead of Halloween.
The first four episodes of Stranger Things season 5 will premiere on Netflix on Nov. 26, with three more episodes dropping on Christmas and the finale airing on New Year’s Eve.
