Canada launches Commemorative Scholarship Program in honour of Flight PS752 victims

October 4, 2023 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, launched a commemorative scholarship in honour of those who tragically lost their lives in the unlawful downing of the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 by the Iranian regime on January 8, 2020.

Among the 176 people killed were 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents of Canada. These victims included brilliant minds and dedicated students who made significant contributions to Canadian educational institutions.

Canada’s Flight PS752 Commemorative Scholarship Program will disburse 176 scholarships, each one in the name of a victim. International and Canadian students attending colleges and universities in Canada will be eligible to apply if their field of study aligns with the victims’ academic or professional backgrounds or focuses on the prevention of air disasters.

Canada continues to honour the victims of Flight PS752 and all air disasters and to stand in solidarity with their families and loved ones.

Canada will continue to be there for the families of the victims of Flight PS752 as it relentlessly pursues justice and accountability for them. Canada and its partners in the Coordination Group—Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom—continue to work together to hold Iran accountable for the downing of Flight PS752, including through the filing of a case against Iran with the International Court of Justice.
