From DVF’s Vintage Pop-up Party to a Celebrity Closet Sale: Wednesday Night Was a Celebration of Pre-loved Fashion


Along the cobblestoned streets of Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, Diane von Furstenberg and Liana Satenstein have transformed the DVF Studio headquarters into an archival dreamscape swathed with the designer’s signature pieces of the past—on display and shoppable until November 20.

Over dirty martinis and sweet treats, guests like Nicky Hilton and Elizabeth Sulcer browsed the curation that has taken over the boutique. The vibrant display is awash with prints and, of course, no shortage of wrap dresses. Serving as a nod to von Furstenberg’s legacy, it’s a time capsule of her influence as both a designer and as a fashion figure on the New York circuit.

Draped in gold—a mini dress paired with black fishnet tights and lustrous ankle booties and a bold statement necklace to match—DVF’s starry energy was radiating. “I know what timeline everything is from just by the patterns,” she told Vogue. “Seeing them again is like a playback.”

Of her most era-defining design, the wrap dress of the 1970s, she added: “I was a certain kind of young woman, and I was somehow able to translate that. I thought women should feel like women, but they should act like men.” Clad in a vintage wrap dress—of course—Satenstein posed for photos with Haidee Findlay Levin on the leopard print staircase.

Meanwhile, across town, The RealReal’s hotly-anticipated annual Celebrity Closet Sale was being spotlighted. This year, Chloe Sevigny, Julianne Moore, Parker Posey, Sarah Sherman, Isaac Mizrahi, Mel Ottenberg, and stylist Patti Wilson are among those taking part.

At Dimes restaurant on the Lower East Side, the resale platform’s chief brand officer Kristen Naiman was surrounded by a bevy of best dressed list staples, including Sevigny and Wilson. Naiman had leaned on stylist Haley Woolens—Sevigny’s longtime collaborator—for her help wrangling participants for the charity sale. “I love Haley’s work. She’s an incredible New York fixture, the work she does and the people she does it with are really connected. She collaborates with them to use clothing as a language and as a part of their lives,” Naiman told Vogue.

Wollens, a cool-as-a-cucumber, born-and-bred Manhattanite, teamed her patchwork blue jeans and slogan t-shirt with knee-high leather boots, a navy-blue baseball cap, and layered gold arm cuffs. “It’s been ingrained in my lifestyle: trading clothes with your friends, discovering clothes at flea markets, becoming friends with sellers. Getting into high fashion was a whole other world…because for me, fashion always lived in the streets,” she said.

As a pioneer of closet sales, this collaboration with The RealReal was perfect for Wollens. She chose the nonprofit We Do it Too, a Harlem-based organization committed to supporting local youth through creative programs, as the beneficiary of the sale—which is live on the platform now. Having worked with the charity in the past, Wollens had no hesitation contributing significant pieces of her own for the closet sale too. “I wanted to give back in a way that felt relevant to what I have to offer…which, as a stylist, is lots of great clothes!”
